Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, December i23rd, 2004 53

Ramblers enjoy a busy year ,

IT lias been an extremely successful year for the Clitheroe Group of the Ramblers' Association. Clitheroe Cricket Club

was the venue for the 36th annual meeting to which 34 members were wel comed by chairman Jane Donnelly. Mrs Donnelly said that

it had been quite an excit ing year, the highlight being the new right of access to open country coming into force in our area on September 19th. To mark the occasion 65

ramblers had taken part in a memorable commemora tion walk from Bleasdale and she thanked John ■Whitehead in particular, for all his hard work con nected with and leading up to this event. Another notable event

during the year had been the publication of the group’s first book of walks which is now on sale and Mrs Donnelly thanked all those who had contributed to its success. Over the year member

ship numbers and the number of members on walks had continued to increase, despite the poor summer weather. Thanks were expressed

to Val Grooby for organis ing the walks programme ■ and obtaining leaders. The chairman thanked

all the committee for their hard work during the year with special thanks to Ben Brown for his work as sec retary, to John Whitehead for his help in so many areas and to the footpath secretariat lead by Pat Parrott. Particular thanks also

went to Frances Prince who was retiring after five years hard work as social secretary. In his report as secre

tary, Ben Brown re-iterat ed the importance of the passing of the CRoW Act. In addition he said that,

during the year, the 500th Wednesday evening walk had taken place and that the objective of a walk every weekend had been achieved. The total number of

walks had been 114 where as 20 years ago there had only been 39. The group had partici

pated in three Ramblers’ Association National events during the year these being the Festival of Winter Walks, the Wel come to Walking Week and the National Foot path Week. I t had again been a very successful year for the

group with both a high profile image and an important contribution to the Ramblers’ national objectives being main tained. Following the treasurer’s

report and approval of the accounts, Pat Parrott pre sented her report as foot path secretary. She reported current

changes taking place in tha t Ribble Valley Bor ough Council has taken , responsibility for footpath •- problems in 19 parishes so th a t problems are now dmded between both Lan cashire County Council and Ribble Valley Bor ough Council. I t will be some time

before it is possible to fully assess how this will affect the work of the footpath secretariat. Mrs Parrott reported

that the replacement for Sawley 8 on the Ribble Way at Sawley has not yet been finalised and that the ••jii, footbridge at Mitton is currently held up in nego tiations. The social secretary’s

report confirmed that all events had again gone well during the year. The remaining reports prompt ed no queries. All officers who were

willing to stand again were re-elected; Joyce Poole was elected as treasurer and Val Boardman as social secretary. The post of press and

publicity officer currently remains unfilled in the absence of any volunteer. Following the end of the

meeting and light refresh ments, David Oyston, of Lancashire County Coun cil Countryside Services, gave a very interesting talk about his work on Pendle Hill. This covered a fascinat

ing range of activities including fencing, heather management, construction

and maintenance of foot paths and stiles, the man agement of the land for wildlife, particularly breeding waders such as lapwings, curlew, snipe and redshank. He described the role of

Countryside Rangers, described the success of "* ■ the parish lengthsman scheme and concluded his illustrated talk with a spectacular aerial ■view of Pendle Hill before answer ing a variety of questions ^ from the audience.
