THE 10th annual l\Tialley Walk is being held on Tuesday, December 28th. The six-mile circular,

which is open to all, starts at 10-15 a.m. a t the Whal- ley Bus Station and includes a customary ■ ridiculous hat competition.

Vandal attack VANDALS damaged the windscreen and paintwork of a Renault van parked in Kemple View, Clitheroe, between 3a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday, causing an esti mated £300 worth of dam age.

www.ciitheroetoday.co.uk Silly hat walk Plenty of choice for photographers

IN the space of two weeks, Ribblesdale Camera Club has seen 50 years of Rib- ble Valley photography, from high .qual ity black and white enlargements from the 1950's to sublime modern colour slides and the latest computer aided digital technology. The common theme was creativity,

whether doing i t with a seeing eye, patience and an understanding of light, by vision in the darkroom or skills on the computer. The common aim was to transform

an ordinary photograph into something very special. Two weeks ago, club members

Stephen Robinson and Dean Weaver demonstrated how to refine a picture using “Photoshop” computer software.

I t is used to ensure the best possible quality of printed photos. When a lecturer failed to arrive chair

man Jeff Cowling showed black and white prints from the club’s archives and member Mike Caddy his slide pho tography which relies on the quality and direction of light. This week photographs taken last

summer in the Grindleton garden of chairman Jeff Cowling and his wife, Judy, were judged, mince pies were served. The club now closes until January 4th

when the Lancashire and Cheshire Pho tographic Union Documentary Prints Folio will be viewed. , For information about the club, call secretary Ken Geddes on 01200 423474.

Norman for life in space!

GUESTS from the Kibble Valley were treated to a spot of star gazing thanks to a

Sabden man. Mr Norman Crompton, who

owns Pendle Valley Observatory, invited pupils from St Mary’s Pri mary School, in Sabden, and the Ribble Valley Mayor and Mayoress Coun. Charles Warkman and his wife R u th , to his astronomical observatory, during a presentation of some new equipment. The keen astronomer, whose

observatory is based a t his home, was donated a ‘spectrum analyser’ by Agilent Technologies, the world’s largest test and measure ment company based near Manch ester. The equipment, which is used

towards the Search for Extraterres trial Intelligence (SETI), was pre sented to Mr Crompton by the company to assist him in his work.: It is the last piece of equipment the astronomer needs in order to com plete the construction of a laser detector, used for a SETI search.

He added: “ I am extremely

grateful to Agilent Technologies for their generosity in donating the spectrum analyser to the observa tory. 'The observatory, which has been

open to the public for the past 25 years, attracts many visitors in an effort to promote astronomy. The Mayor said he was amazed that a facility such as the Sabden

Observatory existed in the Ribble Valley. “I am very interested in astrono

my and would not have missed my tr ip to the observatory for the world,” he said. Our picture shows Mr Paul Cou-

sans from Agilent Technologies pre senting the equipment to Mr Crompton with pupils and the Mayor and Mayoress. (B141204/5a)
