singer Phil Collins. Cn his show that is. Yes, these two legends come knocking on the Kumars’ door during the Christmas special on Boxing Day and it’s really blown him away. “Phil flew in from S\vitzerland especially to

do the show because he’s such a big fan. Phil’s a lovely bloke. We discovered we were both brought up in Hounslow. Now he lives in Geneva. I got as far as Islington,” jokes the incredibly funny and charming 40-year-old. “And he bought us all presents. He gave

Sanjeev Kumar a cuckoo clock, Dad got a chocolate gold brick - even Anne got a S\viss

Army peii-knife. “I t ’s not going to get any better than hav

ing Anne Robinson and Phil Collins coming round and Phil giving you presents, is it?” Sanjeev, who came up with the idea for the

o O H r

Kumars which started back in 2001, says the strange environment means the celeb guests are seen in a completely different light than they are on traditional chatshows.

“They tend to behave more naturally

because they’re not sure where the questions are coming from,” he explains. “Anne spoke very openly and was funny about all the sur gical enhancements she’s had. Generally I’m not a fan of cosmetic surgery but she does look good. You can tell she’s had it - she does look quite a bit younger. “It was quite raucous with Anne. She asked

a lot of questions herself. We got a fun side to her. She lost it - it was really nice to see that. “And afterwards Phil admitted that he’d

found himself watching what was going on and being entertained by it, forgetting he was actually there to answer questions himself! “They both really enter into the Christmas

spirit,” smiles Sanjeev. Apparently life on set has seen no change since Sanjeev and his Kumars colleague,

Meera Syal, became an item. “I t hasn’t changed anything - we’ve been

friends and worked together for 10 years. We’re both very professional and when you’re at work there’s a bigger picture,” he says. Off set, Christmas is unlikely to be as crazy for the Bhaskars as it is chez-Kumars.

“I don’t go to Midnight Mass or anything

but since I was a kid we’ve celebrated Christ mas. My parents went along with it for us children. We used to get a small plastic tree out of the loft so me and my sister would feel satisfied that we had one. I think it was cun ning trick on my father’s part to have a small one - the presents have to be proportionally small. This Christmas I ’ll probably be my parents doing the Christmas dinner thing.” While Sanjeev loved the cuckoo clock Phil

gave him (which he admits he kept) his real- life family may not do so well on the Christ

mas present front. “I ’ve always been rubbish at buying pre

sents,” he admits. “I leave it up to my younger sister. She’s got far better taste than me. I ’ll happily pay whatever but my choice is awful. The only thing I really know about is movies. I can buy people DVDs but not everybody’s as mental about films as I am. And I make it very difficult for everyone else to buy fdr me. They get me DVDs but inevitably I ’ve already got them. But I’m happy not getting presents. Good company, good food and wine, everything else pales.”

We’re peas in a pod, says Claire

MORE often than not, marriages in soap- land barely make it through the reception, let alone happily ever after. But on Christmas Day on ITVl’s “Coro

nation Street” we’ll witness a union that’s set to last. Well, past the New Year at least. The couple in question is Corrie’s Ashley

and Claire. And Julia Haworth, the 25- year-old actress who plays the blushing bride, is delighted for her alter ego. “I think Ashley and Claire are perfect for

each other. I don’t think I ’ve ever seen a screen couple who are more suited to each other. They’re peas in a pod.” I t ’s just over a year since Julia walked

onto the cobbled streets of Weatherfield as Claire and started nannying for broken hearted, single dad Ashley. “I t’s a huge compliment to get a huge

storyline at peak -viewing time. I’m really enjoying being part of the cast,” smiles the Lancashire-born actress. “I wanted to be an actress from the age

of about 11.1 went to Youth Theatre when I was 10 and later studied drama at Manchester University.” “Coronation Street” is not her first TV

role. She’s already starred in popular dra mas such as “Peak Practice” and “Mersey Beat”. Filming the ceremony struck a chord

with Julia, who’s getting married to fiance, 27-year-old accountant Jon Wormold, in Spring 2006. The couple live together in Manchester. “It felt strange to walk down the aisle

but I didn’t feel superstitious. In fact, it makes me feel excited about my own wed ding day. I’ve got an idea of what I’d like in my head. I imagine I ’ll have a dress made as well but it will be something a little more stylish, individual and modern.” Claire’s wedding dress was the first outfit

that Julia has enjoyed wearing on TV since she started on the soap. . “Claire’s clothes! Every day I recoil when

I see what’s been laid out for me,” she gig gles. “But then I think, ‘Hang on, this is the character’. I t’s nice to have a difference in what I wear on screen and off.” But having a different wardrobe doesn’t

stop the fans recognising Julia when she’s out and about. It’s an uncomfortable situa tion for the actress. “"When fans come up I smile and try and

chat to them. I t ’s nice to hear good things about the show. But if they make a person al compliment, I’m all over the shop. “I enjoy meeting people and going along

to auditions. "When you’re in front of the camera you take on a completely different persona and get round it that way.”
