surface was just the green light that both teams need ed to play some dazzling, open running rugby. ,. Despite a carload of

players missing the kick-off after an ill-advised detour, Toe H sportingly lent Clitheroe some players to

start the match." ,• By half-time Clitheroe

were up to full compliment and also two tries to one to the good. The first was a beauty, a

real winger’s try. From a scrum 30 metres out, num ber eight Oliver McEntyre picked up and drove down the narrow side with his back row chums Ralph Rigby and Roger Holmes in support.; ■ With the defence drawn

in, a quick ruck saw the ball spun away to the open side to put quicksilver wing man Russell Shiel away for the touchdown. The second was more of

an opportunist score, wheq the home team tried to be over-adventurous in their own 22, and a turn over

ball was,Snaffled away for try number.tvrofdrthe fly-’

the home.team’sb'est-, and they were’really' gifted a try when some half-heart- 1 ed tackling, coupled with poor concentration,’ spoiled what would have been a clean sheet. However, after skipper

the line out, the supply chain of ball was unending. Perhaps Clitheroe were

guilty of overgilding the lily at times, and some per sonal glory hunting pre vented more tries being scored. Clitheroe had the last

laugh with McEntyre touching down after some good approach work from . the pack, including a blockbusting run from Alec Haugh down the centre. Nathan Peel converted

to seal up a rousing match played in tremendously good spirit. On Saturday, as well as

fully opening the new clubr house, Clitheroe return to league action against local rivals Colne and Nelson (2- ■30 p.m.) at Littlemoor. :

Barker’s Blues bow put on hold

By CHRIS BODEN

NEW signing Glyn Bark er is again forced to wait for his Clitheroe debut as he is ineligible for Satur day’s League Cup clash at Squires Gate. The promising young

frontman was due to make his Blues bow at Bacup Borough on Saturday, but

the West View pitch was waterlogged, and the game postponed. So the former Staly-

bridge and Hyde man will have to wait another week, until the trip to St Helens on December 13th. Boss Lee Sculpher said:

“Glyn is cup-tied, so he can’t play. I t will be the most long-awaited debut in history!

•, “He won’t be available

until St Helens now, but he is raring to go.” The postponement was

a blow to Sculpher, as he looked for his men to respond to the FA Vase defeat against Whitley

Bay the previous week: “I didn’t get over to Bacup, but I was disappointed the game was called off. “We were looking to

bounce back after the Vase, but now and again, a week’s rest doesn’t do any harm, and we will be refreshed.

“We have a lot of sus

pensions coming up though, starting on Mon day with Neil Spencer and Chris Whittingham, who are out for two weeks, and following that, Glenn Ainsworth and Russ Clark. “It puts a strain on our resources, but we’ve been in this situation before and we will come through.” Sculpher feels his men

will be champing at the bit on Saturday, as they look to earn a place in the League Cup quarter finals. The Blues have already

will be a fantastic achieve ment, but it is a tough draw. “It is an opportunity to

reach the last eight, and obviously we did well in the cup last season, get ting to the final, and if we want to be successful as a team in the league, we should be doing well in the cups as well. “Having got to the final

last season, I expect the lads to be champing at the bit.”

Sculpher, on top of the

won 1-0 at Squires Gate this season, with a Chris Whittingham goal, but the player-manager is wary of the seasiders’ threat: “We will be going there probably as favourites on paper, but they have recently named a new manager, and things will be changing there, with new players and so on. j“So they may be an

unknown quantity. “We’ve already won

there, and it goes without saying that we are confi dent because we haven’t

. lost away all season. . “If we can get to Christ mas unbeaten away, that

imminent suspensions, has also, written off a number of players through injury until the New Year. “Gary Jackson, Russ Clark and Jason Jones we will proba bly be without until after Christmas, maybe mid- January. We will let them progress at their own rate.” However, Martin Aspin

wall is close to a first team return after an extensive injury lay-off: “Martin is coming back to fitness after picking up hip and back problems around 12 months ago. “That is a massive

boost, and will be like a new signing. I ’m looking forward to having him back. “He is a very good play

er, a massive asset to the squad.” However, all is quiet on

the incoming front: “There is nothing doing at the moment. “We’re always looking,

but there is no-one stand ing out at the moment.’ N O R T HW E S T
