revenge! Hurst Green........................ j Ribble Valley Borough . . . .3

REVENGE, they say, is a dish best served cold. However you’d have been hard

pressed to freeze ice-cubes in the time since Hurst Green’s late vic tory away to the Valleymen a few weeks ago.

On this occasion Anthony

Clarkson’s men emerged comfort able winners to maintain their title challenge. The value of squad strength

and depth was exemplified by the Badgers.

With three key players missing

they were able to call on the calm ing influence of new signing John ny Proctor, a magnificent man of the match performance from Craig Barnes in an unfamiliar centre back role, and two virtual new signings on the comeback trail. . Despite kicking up the slope in

S

the first half, Hurst Green looked eager and posed a threat, and a 25-yard screamer' from Wes Clarkson helped settle the Bad gers, before on half-time, top scor er Paul Chippendale deflected a clearance into the Hurst Green net for a crucial lead. The second half was a test of

character for the Valley, with the impeccable Stuart Brown mar shalling the back line, none stood taller than the homecoming Paul Parkinson. Back in the fold after a month

training with a Nationwide League Third Division side, Parkinson was an absolute power house in the midfield and his return is a major boost for the Valleymen’s chances this season. Coing down the slope, Hurst

Green’s pressure finally told on 70 minutes when Tupp, a player of intelligent running, struck a neat goal to give his side a life line. However, the last word went to

another returnee, Martin Seedall, whose only previous perfor mances this season have been as a stop-gap goalkeeper. He scored the crucial third on

80 minutes after a tremendous show of strength from Parkinson wide on the left. The drama didn’t end there for

the healthy crowd as there was still time for the Hurst Greeners to rattle the crossbar, and Bad gers keeper Graeme Seedhall to rattle the upright when making an excellent late save to keep the Valley’s two-goal advantage through to the final whistle. Special mentions should also go

out to Si Tattersall and Craig Dewhurst, whose levels of consis tency have been the bedrock of the recent run of form for the' Badgers, with the understated

: but impressive left-back Simon Tipton the pick for Hurst Green;

Second best

Waddington............ ...i Embsay Reserves .......... .. .5 THIS tough encounter saw Waddington come out second best. Waddington set off well and

. took the lead with a goal from Robert Lloyd. But Embsay came back and

equalised before going 2-1 up with a penalty on the stroke of half time.

•The first 10 minutes was close

ly-contested until a moment of madness from Waddington keep er Walsh, who retaliated after a late challenge which saw Embsay awarded a second penalty to take the score to 3-1. Waddington fought back and made chances with efforts from

. Tim Fagan, Peter Fletcher and Robert Lloyd, but Embsay’s keeper was outstanding all after noon. Embsay piled pressure on

Waddington in the last 10 min utes and scored twice more before the final whistle. Waddihgton would like to

thank Mortimers of Clitheroe for sponsoring the match. On Saturday, Waddington play

Oxenhope Reserves at home, all players to meet 1-15 at ground, kick-off 2 p.m.

Late winner

Barnold8wick Town. . .. . . . 2 Waddington Reserves........3 WADDNGTON came back from two goals down to earn their sec ond win of the season. On a heavy pitch, both teams

created chances, with Ashley Chaplin going closest for the Vil lagers in the first half. Bamoldswick took the lead with

a close-range shot into the bottom comer, and in the second half, with the pitch progressively getting worse, Bamoldswick won a comer and scrambled home a second. Lowly Waddington refused to

give up against the second-placed Barons and pulled a goal back against the ran of play. A Bamoldswick defender han

dled the ball in his own area, and Jonathan Dugdale was on hand to convert the resulting penalty. Waddington’s equaliser came five minutes later when good

^work from Craig Harrison pres sured a defender to produce a sloppy back pass, and the result ing ball slipped past the hapless Town keeper. With just minutes remaining,

Chaplin broke down the wing and unleashed a pinpoint cross that was met by the bullet header of Tierney to seal the villagers’ sec ond win of the campaign. Special mention has to go to the

ever impressive goalkeeper Wayne Leach, who pulled off a great save to deny a Bamoldswick equaliser in the dying moments of the match.

Barrowford Celtic . . . . . . - . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 ROEFIELD turned in their best performance of the season in an encouraging display. ■. The locals started well, with both keepers called

Roefield Leisure Juniors Under9s . . . . . . .1

into action. - Unfortunately, the slippery ball caused Shepherd

problems, and two goals rolled in for Barrowford. He then got to grips with the situation, and some

long'goal kicks enabled Roefield to .continue to attack and win some comers.

> Their confidence began to rise, and an excellent run

down the right culminated iii a strong strike from Duerden, driving the ball into the back of the net. In the second half, Roefield continued to apply the

pressure. Burrill was unlucky to shoot over the bar and no

other keeper has been made to work as hard by Roe field so far. Lewis Bilbie had one of the best chances of the game

after he worked the ball into the box, but then slipped as he looked certain to score. Duerden continued to cause the defence problems, but Roefield were unable to add to the score.

Under 12s continued their recent resurgence in resillts with a 2-0 victory over Accrington League rivals Nelson FC. M a n -o f - th e -m a tch Thomas Halliwell scored

both goals. Readstone Under 10s .2 Clitheroe Wolves........0 MAINTAINING their push for the top-of-the- table are Readstone United Under 10s who won twice

last week, firstly with a convincing 2-0 win over Wolves. United's goals came cour

tesy of Joe Martin and Jack Nuttall, while man-of- the-match was awarded to Jack Hudson. In the second their fix

tures Jack Hudson netted a hat-trick that was enough in itself to see off rivals Barrowford Celtic. Further goals came from

Adam’ Haslam and Joe Martin to seal the rout. Darryl Holland was named man of the match. Readstone Under 17s .1 All Blacks ..................5 READSTONE United Under 17s suffered a disap pointing defeat at the hands of the All Blacks. Duncan Fearnhead

scored the only goal of the game while Chris Briggs was named man-of-the- match. Readstone Under 16s .2 Feniscowles................2 AFTER dominating the • game for long periods

Readstone United Under 16s managed a point in ; game that they should real ly have won. Tom Clarke and Matt

game came from Daniel Martin, while Raees Bleas- dale was named man-of- the-match. Alastair Small ey also deserves special praise for his efforts.

Great saves pave the way for victory

Brier field Celtic Red .1 Wolves Under 11s . . . .4

IN a game of two halves, the Wolves were fortunate only to be one goal down at half time after a lacklustre display. They were also indebted

to man of the match McGrath in goal, for some excellent saves and keeping the team in the game. The second half got off

to the perfect start for the Wolves, with an equaliser from Meyler in the first few minutes. And with confidence

returning, further goals from Astin, Hutchins and Bailey settled matters. West End.................. .2 Wolves Under 13s . . . .6 WOLVES maintained their recent improved form with an emphatic win over West End. Despite appaling condi

tions the match was given the go-ahead, and with the advantage of the slope and wind in the first half Wolves needed a good cushion by half time. And they did just that

with style as the raced to a 5-0 lead with a hat-trick from man of the match Liam Anderson and further goals from Ryan Finnegan and Stephen Tandy. Kurt Roberts added a

sixth early in the second half and with the match won, Wolves took their foot

Whalley Juniors Pumas Under 14s..................2 Fulledge Colts................................................... 2 WHALLEY Pumas Under 14s gave runaway league leaders Fulledge Colts a real scare and were unlucky not to come away with all three points in a terrific 2-2 encounter. Fulledge started the strongest and took the lead

from a free kick after seven minutes. The Colts then went 2-0 up after 15 minutes but Whalley kept their heads up and finished the half on top but nothing to show for their efforts The second half was totally Whalley’s as they pounded the Colts defence. Arran McCarthy’s pinpoint free kick found Sam Townend’s head and the Pumas pulled one back. Fulledge were rattled and birthday boy Gary

Micallef meat a McCarthy corner and Pumas were level. Man-of-the-match Mark Frankland was superb

along with Grant Eddleston and the rest of the Pumas defence as the Colts lost their 100% record, but hung on to deny Pumas all three points.

off the gas allowing West End a couple of consola tion strikes. Akzo ..........................3 Wolves Under 10s Blue 1 DESPITE losing 3-1, Wolves’ performance proved to be the best for some weeks against staunch opponents Akzo. Good football was

played throughout the local side and if Clitheroe had a little more luck on goal then they could have come away as winners. ' At half-time the scores

were level but Wolves slipped up after the break

and Akzo took a com manding 3-0 lead. But Wolves did not let

their heads drop and manged to battle back and score a consolation goal through James Bank. Man-of-the-match went

to Michael Tomlinson. Wolves Under 15 Girls 6 Penwortham Girls . . .1 CLITHEROE Wolves Under 15 Girls recorded an impressive cup victory over tough opponents Pen wortham in what proved to be a high standard of foot ball. First to score was player

of the match Chelsea Crook who broke through the Penwortham defence to slot the ball past the keep er, before a second came from Joane Green when the visitors failed to clear from a comer. At 2-0 up the Pen

wortham side could not handle Wolves great attacking play as Carly Thomas unleashed an unstoppable left-foot volley to score a third. Good interlinking play

from Green Thomas and Crook finally saw the latter net a fourth, before Pen wortham pulled a consola tory goal back. After the break Wolves

continued to dominate and it was not long before Crook, with great skill and accuracy, scored from a tight angle to complete her hat-trick. Green then claimed a sixth goal to seal the game. The Wolves defence of

Geraldine Seed and Bella Peregrine proved outstand ing throughout the game. Darwen Rangers______1 Wolves Under 13s . . . .3 DESPITE going a goal down in the first half, Wolves Under 13s main tained their excellent form by beating their Darwen rivals in the final moments of the game. even had a penalty saved before Chris Brewer found the back of the net to draw the scores level at 1-1. But it wasn’t until the

final 10 minutes that the locals really came alive. Chris Scott latched onto a through ball and fired under the advancing keep er to go 2-1 ahead, before a loose clearance enabled Jor- • dan Rhodes to unleash an unstoppable 25-yard screamer for an emphatic finish to the game. Ciaron Barton was man-

of-the-match, while Elliot Artinstoll and Matthew Winkley also had excellent games. Wilpshire Wanderers Under 10s ................. 4 Borrowdale............... 1 IN wet and windy condi tions at Salesbury, the Wanderers got back to win ning ways. , Sam Burgess scored two

goals, the second a magnifi cent header, Joshua Fur- longer scored with a shot from distance, and Jack Swarbrick got the fourth after a fine move. ' ' The Wilpshire goalkeep

er Ben Phillips limited the visitors to one goal with some fine shot stopping and was named man of the match. Special thanks should be

given to Stephen Burgess for erecting the goals on his own in atrocious weather.

Big names in race date

THE annual Bolton by Bowland Fell Race takes place on Sunday, starting from the centre of the village at 11 a.m. Many of the top fell runners from

the North of England will be in action in a bid to break the course record presently held by two local runners. Sean Livesey set the men’s time in

1989 with a time of 44 minutes 18 sec onds, while Maureen Laney recorded 50 minutes 47 seconds for the ladies’ honour in 1991. Entries for the race, which covers a

distance of eight miles around the surrounding countryside, will be taken on the day. Further details can be obtained

from race organiser Roger Dewhurst (447634).

Dog score an

emphatic win Dog Inn ................................... 3 Roebuck................................... 0 DOG Inn climbed off the bottom of the Harry Dewhurst Memorial League Third Division with an emphatic win over Roebuck. The Whalley side endured a nervy

opening, with keeper Yasser Patel called upon to make a stunning save in the 10th minute. However, the tension eased slightly

when John Parkin raced through on goal and fired emphatically past the Roebuck keeper. A deflected shot from the outstand

ing Chris Horrocks put the Budweiser Boys 2-0 up on the half-hour. And despite initial sighs of a Roe

buck fightback, victory was secured when skipper Martin Holtom headed home Dave Dewhurst’s pinpoint .cross. : Delighted Dog Inn manager Simon

Kerins said after the game: “You will not find a prouder manager any- wherel”, “All 12 players were superb, and if

we have ever performed with greater spirit and unity, then.I do not recall it.

• “This was a must win game and we ~

havewonit. “We have two games remaining

and we want to take maximum points from them.”
