Intriguing mix of young and old at concert
IT will be an intriguing mix of young and old when Stonyhurst College celebrates its annual pub lic c arol se rvice to d ay a t St Peter’s Church, Stonyhurst. The old will be provided by a
volume of 18th Century music, part of which the choir will sing, and the young comes from the pupils themselves who will not only sing in th e choir, b ut also provide th e organ accompani ment. “We always try to make the
service something special,” said Mr Jonathan Hewat, marketing
and admissions manager, “and this year will be no exception. The choir will actually be singing Christos Natus Est from a copy of the Gradualis which we hold in our library.” The volume is one of six, which
arrived a t S to n y h u rs t in 1950 when the then Duke'of Welling ton donated them. "How the volumes ended up
with us is ra th e r a nice story,” said curator Jan Graffius. “They were originally produced for the King and Queen of Spain to be sung in th e royal chapel in
Granada. “They were collected by the Duke of Wellington dur ing th e Peninsula Wars in the 1790s and were brought back to this country and kept in his man sion, Apsley House. “There they stayed until 1950
when the then Duke came across them again. He remembered vis itin g S to n y h u r s t w ith Queen M a ry in th e 1930s an d was impressed with the school and its libraries. “As the Gradualis is Catholic
liturgy he thought it was appro priate that it should be kept in a
Catholic school which also hap pened to have a first-class library. We are forever grateful. I t is a beautiful document and the vol ume from which the choir will be singing will be on display in St Peter’s Church so th a t the public can see it. “So not only will we hear the
music th a t the King and Queen of Spain heard we will also be able to see th e an cien t manu script.” The service will follow Stony
hurst tradition and 14-year-old Tim Lewis, of Hurst Green, will
sing the solo first verse of “Once in Royal David’s City”. There will be one break in tra
dition, however. Instead of a staff member playing the organ during the service, pupils too will take turns to accompany the carols. Those selected for the honour
are Caroline Ashton (16), and Alexander Warner (14), both of Goosnargh, Nicholas Bury (14), of Rihchester, Sean Seddon (16), of Brinscall, and Edmund Page (17), of Cirencester. All are welcome to attend the carol service a t 7-30 p.m.
