IKE proper old-school BMWs the .525i boasts an engine that refers to I its name - in this case a 2.5-litre six-
cylinder power plant. We take it for grant ed that the engineering is top notch but how does that styling sit with your eye? Although the 5 Series does carry over
some 7 Series styling cues, it is clear that BMW has listened to customer feedback. The bootlid is less extreme and although the 5 Series features the controversial iDrive control system, it is notably easier to use than the 7 Series system and is backed up by more conventional knobs and switches on the fascia. Much thought has gone into the way
electronic systems blend with good old manual ones. BMW has taken the notion that electronics should aid rather than replace manual systems and the active steering system is a good example.

normally aspirated 2.2-litre VX220 (which continues to special order, priced at £23,490) suffered at the hands of its stablemate. The two cars were developed by Lotus and are built side by side at the Hethel factory. This led many buyers to dismiss the VX220 as nothing more than a rebadged Elise - an incor rect assumption in fact since the two cars share only 10% of their parts and are powered by completely different engines. Still, you could understand people making
it - just as you could understand them buying the Lotus, especially as it was a few hundred pounds cheaper. The arrival of the VX220 Turbo has changed all of that. The only Elise Lotus could offer that got anywhere near this car’s performance was the ‘190’ version - and that set you back between £5,000 and £7,000 more, depending on specification. It was not as well equipped either. Time to get the VX220’s performance into
perspective. Rest to 60 occupies a mere 4.7 sec onds - about the same as Ferrari’s 360M. It cannot match the Maranello car on top speed of course - but then you really would not want to go much faster than 151 m.p.h. in a car like this.

a decent job of bringing a sporty flavour to economy motoring. It may not look quite as cute as its
predecessor but it is a hugely better car. At the end of the day, that should be what counts.

VX220’s very capable chassis to accommodate the substantial extra power of the turbo engine. The basic principles stay the same - a super rigid lightweight aluminium chassis, double wishbone suspension, high-perfor mance brakes with ABS and unique Bridge stone tyres. Changes have been made to the spring and damper rates, which have been increased at the front and rear by 7% and 11% respectively to improve both body con trol and high speed stability. Exterior changes are limited. Just a smart
new set of alloy wheels, a small black “lip” spoiler at the front, a body-coloured spoiler at the rear to aid high speed aerodynamics and a set of wider air intakes on the side of the body to aid engine cooling. Inside, there is optional two-tone leather trim for the seats, leather door inserts and a smarter finish for the dash
board. As with the Elise, entry and exit is for the
able-bodied only and once you are inside, it is a tight fit to squeeze yourself into the thin rac ing-style bucket seats. Arguably, this car is the VX220 we should have had from the start.

‘drive-by-wire’ systems that often isolate the driver from road feedback, BMW has instead developed a system that maintains a link between the front wheels and the steering wheel but which adjusts the power assistance dependent upon speed and yaw rate. This promises quick turn-in when you punch the 5 Series into a comer but with out the accompanying nervousness at high speed that many such cars demonstrate. This system is networked to the Dynamic Stability Control system, reducing the interventions DSC has to make. The 192 b.h.p. engine is pleasantly
punchy, propelling the 5251 to 60 m.p.h. in 7.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 148 m.p.h. Perhaps a little more surprising is
the fact that it will return an average of over 30 m.p.g. on the combined cycle. Only one trim level is available and it is
the well-specified SE version, priced at £26,955. This compares favourably with its key rival, the Mercedes E240 Elegance which retails at a hefty £30,000-plus and is down by nearly 20 b.h.p. straight off the bat.
