Mixing together classical music and rock styles, YES became a huge stadi

North West admit we are still buying these festive flops for loved ones this year, even though we hate getting them ourselves. So it comes as no shock that DIY tools top
the poll as the gift we really do not want to find under the tree on Christmas morning. Even though makeover TV programmes remain popular in the primetime schedule, it seems we are not too keen on getting the tools to turn the spare room into a Gothic boudoir ourselves. But the real surprise entry is at number
four in the top 10 “most dreaded” charts: the music chart’s Christmas number one. That is bad news for those vying for the coveted chart-topping spot this year. Top TV DIY expert “Handy” Andy Kane
defended the tools of his trade: “Practical presents just do not seem to be a hit these days. A socket set or power drill is a great gift you’11 get loads of use from, but I must admit they don’t look as exciting under the tree as a DVD or new watch.” Mr Phil Smith, Camelot’s commercial
director says: “I t was a real surprise that tools came top of the poll, and just goes to show how difficult it is to judge what gifts to buy for friends arid relatives. Topping our collective Christmas lists this
year is money, ahead of a holiday. Then it is jewellery ahead of gift vouchers and a laptop computer as most wanted presents. Most wanted Christmas presents in the
North West: 1. Money (18%) 2. Holiday (16%) 3. Jewellery (10%) 4. Gift vouchers (7%)
2. Novelty festive item (9%) - the flashing- red-nose-and-antler hat might seem perfect for some festive fun and frolics in the shop, but come Christmas morning, it is definite ly a turn-off. Equally unpopular with both sexes and all age groups.
1. DIY tools (19%) - the socket set, electric drill, multi-purpose sander and anything else for the toolbox tops the list as the most unwanted gift, but proved to be particular ly unpopular with women. One in four females say it is the worst thing they could get.
3. Socks (7%) - the staple gift for generations of men, socks are a definite disappoint ment in the gift stakes.
4. Candles (9%) - it is true, they really get on our wick. They are still relatively popular with the ladies though - only 4% did not want them in their stocking.

5. Music charts Christmas number one (6%) - there have been some real Christmas crackers through the years and some prop er turkeys more recently. But it seems the coveted Christmas chart-topper slot is no longer a hit with fans.
6. Shortbread (8%) - a tasty but lardy pre sent that is a traditional gift for grandpar ents, which probably explains why it remains quite popular among the over-55s with only 8% rejecting shortbread as a fes tive favourite.
7. Ties/scarfs (6%) - stylish neckwear as a gift is a real choker for many, although what is sure to make it twice as bad is to combine with the second-most dreaded gift to create - the novelty festive tie!
8. Slippers (4%) - moccasin, clog, espadrille, slip-on - it does not matter what style, we have put our foot in it if we get someone slippers on the big day.
9. Toiletries (3%) - “smellies” are seen as the ideal gift solution for many, but it is clear we turn our nose up at receiving them.

5. Computer/laptop (7%) 6. Clothing (4%) 7. Camera (3%) 8. DVD player (3%) 9. Home electrical item (1%) 10. CD player (1%) Top 10 most dreaded Christmas presents in the North West.
10. Jumper/cardigan (3%) - a winter woolly might seem like a perfect present on a frosty festive morning, but we have given it the cold shoulder in the top 10 most unwanted league. Other items names by survey respondents
were sweets and chocolate, alcohol, a pet, gloves, ornament, cosmetics, mobile phone, football club season ticket.
