Graeme Souness to help the festive villagers have a Dickens of a time
THE sights and sounds of Christmas past will come to life in Whalley village when Blackburn Rovers manager Graeme Souness
officially opens Pickwick Night on Thursday, December 11th. The Whalley Village Pickwick Night festivities
start at 6 p.m., when the village centre will come alive to the sights and sounds of a host of enter tainment. The shops stay open until 9 p.m. with staff donning Victorian-style dress and selling Yuletide gifts and fare. The religious basis for Christmas is being carefully

observed by a short service on the main stage at the bus station. This is followed by Graeme Souness’s offi cial opening, fireworks, and live entertainment throughout the three hours' running time. The organisers have slipped into top gear to pro
vide a whole range of attractions. There are several indoor events and most business premises will be
open, so the event goes on whatever the weather. A new attraction for this year includes the opening
up of the George Street .Car Park for the Spar spon sored children’s activities and entertainment area. This is complemented by amusement rides and a fun fair, held on the Whalley Arms car park. The Methodist Church Hall is open for Father
Christmas to receive your children’s Christmas pre sent wishes, along with tea and coffee for the adults. The village hall offers a haven from the famous Lan cashire weather, containing various craft and charity stalls. Throughout the village, you can listen to
Balderstone Brass Band, the Victorian Choir, and the fairground organs playing your Christmas favourites. The children can also watch a Victorian favourite, "Punch and Judy," while fire eaters and jugglers will be found entertaining the crowds in the streets. Along with the late opening of all your
favourite shops, you will find King Street transformed into a Christmas Street fair with various stalls offering those unique Christmas presents for all your friends and family, hot tasty food and entertainment. The main street will close at 6 p.m. and re
open after 9 p.m. Visitors should be able to avoid car-parking problems, as there is a free park-and-ride scheme from Oakhill College and Whalley Railway Station. All park and ride will be signposted for your convenience: Over the years the organising committee
members have become very experienced and have earned stacks of support from local and regional sponsors. This year’s main sponsor is George Wimpey, who is currently developing new homes at the nearby Calderstones Park. Monies raised by the stalls, sponsors, and
raffles go towards supporting various local charities and groups. So please come along and experience the unique Victorian Christ mas atmosphere offered by Whalley on December 11th, 2003.
