“BUZZING” was the atmos phere described by a head teacher, at a recent fund-raising
event. Youngsters from Read Prima
ry School had a spring clean at home and donated good-as-new clothes, books and toys to go towards a table top sale. Handmade Christmas cards
and models were made by chil dren and parents in order to raise money towards a new school
stage. More than 100 people attend ed the event, which raised £270,
adding towards the £3,000 need ed for the new stage. Headteacher Mrs Joyce Shaw
explained: “A variety of fund raising events have been staged from September until now and we have managed to raise £1,000 for the stage. “The atmosphere was buzzing
in the school hall and there was a real sense of community spirit. “More events will take place in
the new year to raise the remain ing £2,000.” Pictured are children and par ents at the sale. (B161103/1)

MYSTIC RIVER (15) The Grand Cinema from tomorrow.
DRIVEN apart by a ch ild h o od trauma, three men meet again when Jimmy’s daugh- j, ter is murdered. Cop Sean investigates

This Dickens’ classic is a Christmas gem
CHARLES DICKENS’ “A Christmas Carol” must be one of the best-known festive stories, a perennial favourite, a Victorian “feelgood” tale in which a selfish man is redeemed and all ends hap
pily. Writer Charles Way has given us a new version,
accompanied by the music and clever lyrics of Richard Taylor. This is definitely a musical in the “Les Miser-
SEAN PENN stars in “Mystic River”
Eastwood gets behind the camera to direct this tense • thriller, his task made eas ier by an excellent cast and a superb source novel. Dennis Lehane’s book is
one of the best thrillers of recent years, rich in Boston detail and close character study. Those who have read
the book might be disap pointed by the movie, adapted for the screen by Brian Helgeland, but only because a film can never match the detail of a novel. Stars of “Mystic River”
include Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and the increas ingly-acclaimed Kevin Bacon, who has come a very long way since his “Footloose” youth. He plays a cop compro
mised by old friendships, while Penn delivers a . multi-layered perfor mance as a man in whom grief, rage and honour col lide head-on.
DOWN WITH LOVE (12A); The Grand Cinema; from tomorrow
IT is 1963 in New York and author Barbara Novak’s feminist guide, “Down With Love”, is a bestseller. Celebrity playboy and
journalist Catcher Block disguises himself as a well- mannered innocent in an attempt to make her fall in love and thus debunk her feminist ideology and expose her as a hypocrite. His plan backfires when
he s ta rts to fall in love with her. This film, starring
Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, hopes to recreate the Rock Hudson and Doris Day romantic capers of the 1950s and ’60s. While
enjoyable
enough, it does not quite pull it off.
ables” style Michael Vaughan sings the demand ing role of Scrooge with both menace and, later, pathos and humour. The first half is rather bleak and dark, but
flashes of colour and gaiety liven the second half in a wonderful fancy dress party, a good opportu nity for Nicola Blackman and Adam Price to strut their stufL The Cratchitts are well presented by Tony Tim-
berlake and Julie Jupp, who give a resounding ver sion of a song, “Enough” about the miserly Scrooge.
Hannah McPake makes a charming young love;
for Scrooge and fiancee for his nephew, Fred. All the cast, apart from Scrooge, act as chorus/
supported by an impressive band of children, who act with confidence, sing with skill and charm the audience completely. : ■ Special praise must go to lighting designer Nick Richings for clever effects of rain and ghostly pres ences, and to designer Kate Burnett for skilful use of filing cabinets and the seamless movement from scene to scene. The Ghost of Christmas Future impressed my teenage companion. Directed by Roger Haines with accustomed
verve, this is for rather older children because of the plot complexity, the understanding that the same actors play many parts, the length, the chal
lenging music and the scary moments. “The Ghosts of Scrooge” runs at The Library
Theatre, Manchester, until January 17th. PIPPAMUNRO

FOLLOWING sell-out success at The Lowry, Manches ter, last Christmas, Pele Productions is bringing its pan tomime-style version of the classic Arabian Nights tale “Aladdin” to the Charter Theatre, Preston, this festive season. Scott Wright, who stars as Mustafa, the Sultan’s
guard, is a familiar face, having previously played Sam Kingston in “Coronation Street”. The character of Sam will be fondly remembered, not
only as Toyah Battersby's boyfriend and Kevin Web ster's top mechanic, but also as “The Snake”, a raunchy stripper who set temperatures racing in the Rovers
Return. This wonderful production of "Aladdin” includes all
the elements of a traditional pantomime, but with a modem soundtrack of the latest chart hits that all the family will know. “Aladdin” has it all, hilarious comedy, great music, stunning costumes, wonderful sets - and a genuine flying carpet! The Christmas production runs at the Charter The
atre from December 11th to January 11th. For show times, ticket prices and availability, call the box office on 01772 258858.
