Calorie counting law adds to compliance burden for UK foodservice businesses

Since April, all foodservice businesses run by companies with more than 250 staff in England are required to display calorie counts on non-prepacked food and soft drinks. All calorie information must be displayed at “the point of choice” for the customer, ie physical and online menus and delivery platforms. The government hopes this will encourage people to make healthier choices and nudge restaurants towards offering healthier options. Public health minister, Jo Churchill, said: “Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to make healthier food choices for themselves and their families, both in restaurants and at home. That is why we want to make sure everyone has access to accurate information about the food and drink we order. These measures form an important building block in our strategy to support and encourage people in achieving and maintaining a healthier weight.” This adds to new labeling requirements for allergens that

came into force in October 2021. Natasha’s Law means that any food that is pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) – including sandwiches, boxed salads and ready meals – now needs to be clearly labelled with the name of the food and a full list of all ingredients with allergens highlighted. More foodservice businesses are investing in systems that can help them implement the new rules accurately and consistently, rather than relying on outdated manual processes. Mike Williams, operations director at Food Alert, which

provides cloud-based compliance software, says: “Those venues that can prove they operate the highest levels of hygiene and food safety will be the ones to win trust and enjoy strong relationships with their customers and build sustainable businesses going forward. And that’s where adopting technology solutions and making the switch to digital compliance plays a big part.”

Michelin Guide to launch in Dubai

The Michelin Guide has announced it will launch a Dubai edition in 2022. At a press conference in March, Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides said: “We are delighted to announce that Dubai will be joining the Michelin Guide family. Our team of inspectors is already in the field, in order to prepare the first selection of restaurants... We will be showcasing the best of Dubai’s gastronomy, to reflect not just the sophistication that the city is famed for, but also the wide diversity of cuisines that the city’s location and history provide.”

DigitalFoodLab has released its report on the state of the European food tech ecosystem. Investments reached €9.5bn in European food tech startups in 2021, a threefold increase in just a year, with Europe’s share of the global FoodTech ecosystem rising to 20%, up from 12%. Investments in grocery delivery startups were the main contributor to the sector’s growth, accounting for 67% of all European food tech funding in 2021. The remaining third was largely dedicated to cloud kitchens and alternative proteins. The report identified five major hubs within Europe that

are most strongly connected to food tech. Berlin was highlighted as the prime location, particularly for its ability to nurture unicorns. Germany as a whole claimed 31% of all investments. London, Stockholm, Paris and Amsterdam were also listed as cities driving the food tech sector forwards. There are now 13 food tech unicorns in Europe, according

to the report, twice as many as last year. It also identified 10 to 20 companies that have the potential to become unicorns in the next 12 to 24 months.

awarded with Michelin stars will be announced in June. In addition to the coveted star ratings, the selection will also include the Bib Gourmand category, a distinction awarded to establishments that provide value-for-money three course meals.

Dubai will be the latest addition to the Michelin Guide, which currently covers 36 culinary destinations across North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Europe. There will be no books printed for Dubai’s Michelin Guide, instead the guide will be available online and through the Michelin app.
