Deliveroo HK’s steps to zero waste packaging

In this pandemic, many restaurants are struggling, turning to delivery to keep them going. This leads to an increase in the use of food packaging. Deliveroo HK is taking steps to reduce food packaging waste generated by its restaurant partners. It is investing HK$2m to incentivize a scheme encouraging restaurants to use plastic-free packaging in line with the government’s push towards banning single-use plastic tableware. Deliveroo HK will enable restaurants to buy sustainable food containers at a discounted rate from zero waste company Sustainabl. Small and independent F&B restaurants will be offered a 50% reduction in packaging prices, with large chains getting 30% discounts for the first six months of the initiative. Sustainabl. packaging offers plastic-free, home-compostable, or recyclable packaging options to Deliveroo partner restaurants. The company uses renewable materials such as sugarcane and wheat processing waste, bamboo and recycled paper. Users of the platform can opt to search for restaurants offering these options.

Den tops Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022

After a three-year hiatus the in-person celebrations of Asia’s 50 Best restaurants took place in Bangkok, Macau and Tokyo in March 2022. In what was the 10th edition of the region’s awards, the title of the best restaurant went to Den in Tokyo, Japan. The contemporary Japanese restaurant is famous for its creative approach to the seasonal and traditional cuisine of Japan. Chef-owner Zaiyu Hasegawa opened the restaurant in 2007, and it has been a mainstay of the list since making its debut in 37th place in 2016. The last time a Japanese restaurant received the accolade was in 2013 when it was won by Narisawa. Although this year’s special occasion saw people getting together there was a hybrid nature to the celebration as travel restrictions meant events were held in three different locations and parts live streamed.
