NEW OPENING: Michelin-starred cuisine arrives in Greenland

Faroese restaurateur Johannes Jensen will bring Michelin-starred food to Greenland for the first time this summer. His restaurant Koks, which received its first Michelin star in 2017 and its second in 2019, has closed the doors of its Faroe Islands location and is set to re-open at Ilimanaq Lodge on the west coast of Greenland in June. Jensen will bring his award-winning head chef Poul Andrias Ziska with him to Greenland where, much like their menu in the Faroe Islands, most ingredients will be traditional proteins sourced from the area, including reindeer. The restaurant, which seats just 30 guests and will serve a 17-20 course prix fixe menu, will open from mid-June to mid-September in 2022 and 2023.

EU inflation soars to record levels, impacting food costs

Rising energy prices, fueled by Russia’s war in Ukraine, have pushed inflation in Europe to record levels, according to new EU figures released in early April.

Consumer prices in the 19 countries that use the Euro rose by an annual rate of 7.5% in March, according to the European Union statistics agency, Eurostat. The latest reading surpassed the high set in March, when it hit 5.9%. It’s the fifth straight month that inflation in the Eurozone has set a record, bringing it to the highest level since record keeping for the Euro began in 1997. Food costs, including alcohol and tobacco, rose 5%, compared with 4.2% in the previous month. European restaurateurs told PBS that prices for frying oil and meat have shot up by 70-100% recently. In some cases, they have had to pass price rises onto customers.
