The future of the beverage industry Beverage packaging will continue to change dramatically in the next five to ten years. It will need to adapt as it sees completely new concepts and delivery models for consumers at home, on the go and for gastronomy. Innovation in adhesive technology that bonds innovative packaging designs are leading the way to a circular economy. For this new world of business opportunities and ventures, H.B. Fuller is focusing on developing more sustainable adhesives and new packaging design solutions for the food and beverage industry, with quality, safety and circularity in mind.
Although adhesives are easily overlooked, they play a role in many aspects of sustainable packaging and labelling. The company’s technical experts have a deep market understanding to better help customers meet their business needs and reduce their environmental footprint.
It is in support of its own future in a circular economy that H.B. Fuller is now committed more than ever to operating sustainably, and enabling customers to improve their products and processes through adhesive solutions that, in turn, help achieve their own sustainability goals.

For that purpose, H.B. Fuller has set a distinct path towards more sustainable practices. Its sustainability ladder for the beverage market illustrates the different ways to achieve a better sustainable solution for a circular world.
Sustainability ladder for beverage packaging The adhesives produced by H.B. Fuller have a great impact on packaging and labelling operations, making these processes more efficient and bridging many opportunities for improvement. In addition to adhesive performance on the line, adhesives also have a big influence on the final package, its performance in the supply chain, aesthetics on the shelf, use by the consumer and the recycling or reuse process. The steps on the sustainability ladder include the four Rs:
Reduce: by using less adhesive or low- temperature adhesives on their packaging lines, brand owners will save more energy in their operations.
Recycle: to contribute to the circular economy, industries have streamlined processes to enable the recycling or reuse of different high-quality materials, such as bottles in the wash-off process, whether for PET or glass, therefore, adding more value to the supply chain.
Renewable: the circular economy model provides a holistic view of the supply chain – from H.B. Fuller’s active R&D projects at incorporating more renewable raw materials up to the next step of completely re-engineering adhesives.
Redesign: ultimately, the company’s approach to this model is about collaboration with different industry partners to make new and redesigned packaging models. It is actively developing new packaging concepts and solutions to reduce the overall amount of packaging materials used – primary, secondary and for the entire pallet.
