ample opportunity for the sector. This expectation was not unfounded, as airports and tourist destinations were flooded with holidaymakers at rates not seen since pre-pandemic. However, with this influx of travel comes its own issues. While the industry is showing clear signs of bouncing back, staff shortages and inflation pose challenges to services across the tourism industry from hotels to aviation. There is clearly still a long way to go before we reach a full recovery, but it is not all doom and gloom. The summer has brought to light new opportunities and expectations for the hotel guest. One thing to come from the pandemic has been the rise of bleisure, with guests combining the hotel experience with business, and hotels are rising to meet this demand. On page 24 we speak to Resident Hotels’ David Orr and Marc Dardenee of Accor to find out how they have adapted to travel trends. Another area affected by the pandemic that no one saw coming is the traditional hotel breakfast. As a result of adapted breakfasting for Covid-conscious travellers, hotels have adopted new offerings ranging from mid-market to experiential luxury. We find out more on page 47. Health continues to be a main focus for the average guest as many continue to prioritise their mental health in the aftermath of the pandemic. We find out how hotels are creating space for mental health in their spa and wellness offering on page 40.
