high-rise residential and office buildings.

Metsä Wood has developed a new wood wall panel solution that it says combines exceptional load-bearing capacity with material efficiency. This innovative wall structure offers significant benefits, especially as a load bearing and stiffening exterior and partition wall solution for
The new wall element is a structural glued wall element made of Kerto LVL beams and panels. It complements the Kerto-Ripa element concept, which has already proven its efficiency in roof and floor structures. According to construction calculations, the Kerto-Ripa wall construction allows, for example, savings of up to 50% in wood materials in the walls of a high-rise building compared to massive wood constructions. The wall structure is also ideal for hybrid construction due to its high load-bearing capacity and allows for continuous wall
EC investigation into Chinese hardwood plywood imports under way
The European Commission (EC) has started an anti-dumping investigation into hardwood plywood imports originating from China.
The decision follows the EC’s consideration of a complaint made by the Greenwood Consortium of EU plywood manufacturers.
An EC statement announcing the action on October 11 said it had seen sufficient evidence to justify an investigation – which will determine whether the product in question is
being dumped and whether the dumped imports, have caused injury to the EU plywood industry.
The investigation of dumping and injury will cover the period from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024, examining relevant trends from January 1, 2021 to the end of the investigation period.

elements up to 20m high. “Despite the smaller amount of material, the load-bearing capacity of the Kerto-Ripa wall element is excellent,” said Janne Heikkilä, team manager, technical customer service at Metsä Wood. “This enables tall and heavily loaded buildings to be constructed in a material- efficient manner.” Metsä Wood does not manufacture the elements itself, but offers a complete concept to element
manufacturers. “Companies already manufacturing Kerto- Ripa elements can supplement their product range with wall elements,” said Jyrki Uimonen, sales development director at Metsä Wood.
Norra Timber continues with sawmill investment
Swedish sawmiller Norra Timber is investing heavily at its Hissmofors Sawmill. The business, part of Norra
Skog Group, is investing SEK150m in the Hissmofors Sawmill to increase production in three separate stages. First up are updates in post-saw processing to enable planned updates to the saw line. The new machinery will have significantly higher capacity than the previous technology, with the SEK40m investment leading to an annual production increase of 10,000m3
. The next two
investment stages involve upgrades to the saw line and total approximately SEK100m.
