“Good afternoon, Tis is Linda Capers of Channel 8 News with an update on the situation in Jefferson park. Late last night parish authorities were called to Jefferson Park in response to reports of gunfire and gang violence in the area. A minor was found with injuries sustained from blunt force trauma; he is expected to recover. Travis Gordon is wanted in connection with these crimes. Arrest warrants have been issued for 3 other suspects.”
Choking for air I bolt upright in bed. Pain grips my chest.
Body rigid, I frantically search my surroundings. Fluorescent lights leave no corner of the hospital room bare. What happened to me? A chorus of machine noise scores my paranoia. Woken by the noise, my mother springs out of the chair to my side. Holding my hand, she lays me back down.
She reaches to her right and pulls back a glass of water with a bendy straw. Drinking greedily, pain flashes through my face. I let out a groan as my jaw seizes. “What happened?” I hiss through clenched teeth.
“Oh my poor baby.” She puts her hand to the bandages around my head. “You don’t remember?”
Someone knocking at the door silences my reply. My mother turns the tv off and a nurse enters. She starts checking my vitals. My mother looks down trying to ignore the uniformed man who followed the nurse into the room. I look at my
