FOREWORD


The World Facility Management (FM) Day on 12 May is a time for the FM community to come together and celebrate their profession. While facility managers around the world are delivering compliance, standards and improved operations to create a better world, for most of us, the past year has been extremely challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


In today’s changing environment, the need to elevate the standards in buildings and estate services is more critical than ever. The pandemic has cast a stronger spotlight on the sense of health awareness in these environments. Users are more cautious and inquisitive about building management’s efforts in providing safe premises. Building managers, property officers, technicians, cleaners and many other professionals in the FM industry are making great efforts to improve the operational efficiency and reliability of our buildings and estates services for the well-being, health and safety of occupants. We have emerged stronger through these learning experiences, and are ready to elevate the industry through both the challenges and opportunities brought forth by the pandemic.


The launch of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 on 10 February 2021 to tackle climate change is yet another significant transformation for the FM industry. We will now have an important role in supporting the government to achieve its sustainability targets. There will be more trees, parks, green spaces and triple cycling paths to be managed and maintained. As buildings account for more than 20 per cent of Singapore’s emissions, FM will have to push towards greater use of cleaner energy and increasing energy efficiency in the management of buildings, especially the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) to hit the 80-80-80 benchmark by 2030—80 per cent Green Buildings; 80 per cent super-low energy buildings; 80 per cent improvement in energy efficiency targets.


As for utility as a sector, Singapore has one of the best electricity, water and gas network systems in the world; and its network reliability is an important contributor to the economy. In this period when we spend most of our time indoors, we need to ensure minimum disruption to energy and water supply for businesses and households. The effort includes enhancing the power grid, for instance, by constructing pilot solar photovoltaic (PV) farms and installing smart house/building systems. With these developments, we anticipate that smart solutions, sustainability and digitalisation will be the order of the day.


We are excited and incredibly honoured to be part of this marathon of dynamic transformation for the built environment. This issue of Construction+ provides a valuable window of information on sustainability and digitalisation; and covers the necessary applications from efficient MEP in buildings to the construction of a renewable energy generator and water treatment facility.


I strongly commend Construction+ for dedicating this edition to utility systems and for providing a valuable platform to share insights and ideas in Singapore’s construction industry and beyond. I wish BCI Asia all the best in its future endeavours!
