EDITOR’S LETTER

Hong Kong has a big potential to play a leading and proactive role to develop the region into a Green finance hub in terms of sustainable developments funding and investment. With a strong demand for Green funding in recent years, ecological civilisation has been made one of the top priorities in national development, including a robust construction from buildings to infrastructure.

In our first issue in 2021, Construction+ Hong Kong is raising the awareness of sustainability through the construction industry perspective, starting from the applied and upcoming materials, projects, Green building assessment tool to the financing scheme.

We talk to Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) to develop further understanding about their market-driven research in advanced materials to benefit the industry commercialisation and the society at large, as well as re-industrialisation to promote the economic growth and sustainability of Hong Kong.

In terms of Green building, we interview the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) chairman, Mr Cheung Hau-wai, about the organisation’s active interaction with the government to push forward the Green building movement as HKGBC is moving forward with four assessment tools under BEAM Plus focusing on different stages of a building life cycle to improving the well- being of people of Hong Kong.

As the government started to support the sustainable development through financing mechanism, a multi-stakeholder contribution of practitioners is needed to execute this idea into reality. In 2019, property developer Swire Properties was the first company in Hong Kong to launch a sustainability-linked loan financing mechanism against Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance improvement and performance to fund ongoing Green building developments. Fanny Lung, Finance Director of Swire Properties, explains more on how she contributes to leverage Green finance opportunities in the industry.

Finally, we highlight our annual award, BCI Asia Awards Top 10 Architects & Developers 2020, to recognise architect and developer firms that have built and designed the greatest volume of buildings, as well as ecologically sensitive projects, in Hong Kong and Chinese mainland. Congratulations for the winners on your hard work, innovations and success!

Happy reading and stay safe!
