Bagg Cole and her husband Norman relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia, in November 2021. As their children had settled on the East Coast after college and weren’t going to move back to Colorado, the Coles moved closer to them. They are making friends and volunteering at the St. George Tucker House in Colonial Williamsburg. They miss the mountains, blue skies, and low humidity as well as longtime friends.
The class extends its condolences to the family of Betsy Edwards Leonard, class president, and Marilyn Miller Thomas.
After a fulfilling career as associate professor in the Art Department at Wingate University, Marilyn Houser Hartness and her husband, Dr. John F Hartness, have retired in Savannah, Georgia. The coastal life, family there, as well as the multitude of art studios, make this a great location for them.
The class expresses sympathy to Elizabeth Barr Johnson on the death of her husband, Samuel Pettaway Johnson, III on March 3.
For the last decade or so, Sandy Glock Harrington ’68 and Dana Clay ’68 have met together between Highlands and Brevard in the North Carolina mountains. They are often joined by Mary Anna McClendon ’69. In August, Sandy and her husband John Harrington hosted Dana at the Brevard Music Center to Symphonies Fantastique conducted by Keith Lockhart.

The class of ’71 lost one of their best on August 24, 2022. Dr. Susan Elizabeth Arnold “Susie” lost her battle with cancer after a brave three- year fight. Through it all, she never lost her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor. If any alums would like to honor Susie’s life with a gift in her memory, please donate to the Class of '71 Scholarship and note that it is in memory of Susie.
1976 Elizabeth Pearce and her husband Richard Lasota celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in September with a lovely pinot noir and a trip to Trader Joe’s. It was perfect in every way. In October, they took an extended road trip to South Carolina for Elizabeth’s 50th high school reunion (so much nostalgia, so little time), followed by a two-week stay at Pawleys Island with friends.
1977 Janet Preyer Nelson, who currently serves on the Board of Trustees, had a remarkable visit throughout the Holy Land of Israel with her brother Dr. Norris Preyer, Jr. and his wife Lucy.
After 44 years of living in Blacksburg, Virginia, Anne Hern Hite has moved to Johns Island, South Carolina. She is closer to her three grandkids and first granddaughter. She also wants to remind everyone about the reunion: “ALERT!! It’s our 50th reunion! Reserve March 31-April 1, 2023. We aren’t getting any younger! If you need to lose weight, get Botox, a facelift, whiten your teeth or use crepe erase, you have plenty of time! Let our ’73 class have the largest number of attendees! Transfers are encouraged to come. Many attended past reunions.”
