Te bench pictured is a commissioned work that Hagan created to celebrate Miss Betty’s 60th work anniversary at Queens. even striking out across campus to do right by her young charges. "If I know you really well and I don't see you for

three days, I'm going to look for you and I’m going to find you," she said.

Tat kind of commitment in the lives of people is a prime and personal example of what Queens is and can be. Interim Chaplain Adrian Bird spotted it early in his time on campus. "She's in the DNA of the place," he said. In a world with dark corners, Miss Betty regards

her part only in the light of the students she loves and serves. "I've been here 60 years, and everything I hear is pleasant," she said, somewhat adamantly, during a lull in the morning swipe line. "Te students are really respectful. I think they carry it out into the community. Tis is a strong place, and if they just keep on and have faith and hope, we're going to make it." As the students file past, finding their own way

toward serving rather than being served, they say to Miss Betty, "Tank you."
