ARTS AT QUEENS PRESENTS ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS FEATURING JOHANNES MOSER, CELLO
February 25 | 8 p.m.
Sandra Levine Teatre, Sarah Belk Gambrell Center for the Arts and Civic Engagement
Considered one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded more than 60 years ago and has released more than 500 recordings. They are famous for having recorded the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning movie “Amadeus,” brilliantly bringing the music of Mozart alive for the film. Having been postponed (due to COVID-19) for a scheduled
performance nearly two years ago, The Academy will perform live at Queens in February. During the pandemic, The Academy continued to charm audiences across the globe with performance films shared on YouTube. For this concert, German Canadian cellist Johannes Moser will join
The Academy. As a soloist, Moser has worked with the world’s leading orchestras. Praised by Gramophone Magazine as "one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists," he has won top prizes internationally for his talent. Notably, Moser performs on a rare cello, crafted in 1694 by the celebrated maker Andrea Guarneri, which is on loan from a private collection.

ARTS AT QUEENS CELEBRATES HOPE WITH CONTRA-TIEMPO
March 25 | 8 p.m.
Sandra Levine Teatre, Sarah Belk Gambrell Center for the Arts and Civic Engagement
CONTRA-TIEMPO is a collaborative, multilingual activist dance theater company based in Los Angeles. Created by and about people of color, their show “JoyUS JustUS” addresses societal issues through a variety of dance, music and words. With “JoyUS JustUS,” CONTRA-TIEMPO comes together in performance and invites the audience to join them along the way. At its heart, the central theme is us. Ana Maria Alvarez, CONTRA-TIEMPO’s artistic director, in her
director’s notes for “JoyUS JustUS” wrote, “We are asking you to be a part of our movement to choose joy, to stand for justice and to vibrate together in love.” The true stories that unfurl in “JoyUS JustUS” inspire audiences
through immersive sights, sounds, movement and words. The performance intends to remind us that our connection as humans has the potential to prevail over division. Despite its heavy subject matter, the touring experience triumphantly emphasizes the power of strength over oppression, hope over burden, and victory over loss.
