ALPO AND MARJORIE KNIGHT CRANE’S LOVE FOR QUEENS EMANATES FROM THEIR FORMER 20-ACRE ESTATE IN SOUTH CHARLOTTE

By: Vanessa Infanzon

In 1998, Marjorie Knight Crane ’90 fell in love with a Charleston low country-style home in South Charlotte before ever stepping inside. “I saw the deer, and I said, ‘sold,’ ” recalled Marjorie. “I hadn’t even seen the house.” She and her husband, Alpo, purchased the home known

as Greenwood and lived there for 20 years. During that time Marjorie enjoyed feeding apples and corn to the deer, one of which she named Bambi and fed by hand. Tis past year, the Cranes gifted the house and its 20

acres to Queens University of Charlotte through a bargain sale agreement, the second one for the university. Te Cranes sold

the property to Queens for less than half of its appraised value, and Queens will sell the property for its market worth, with funds going to support Queens programs. Designed in 1956 by architect Martin E. Boyer Jr.,

Greenwood was the first home built on a 130-acre plot on Providence Road. Te 6,400-square-foot house features a circular staircase that leads up to the front porch, five bedrooms, a dining room, library, living room and office. Salvaged 18th century wood paneling and molding from a Charleston home line the dining room and living room walls and windows.
