Thought Leaders on Campus
Queens hosted an extraordinary lineup of thought leaders and authors this year, including David Brooks, Geddy Lee, Abraham Verghese, Ariel Lawhon, Stacy Willingham, and Tommy Tomlinson. These visits were made possible through support from the Learning Society, Friends of the Library, the Queens Stan Greenspon Holocaust Education Center, and partners like Southminster, The Sharon, and the Gambrell Foundation.
Together, we are promoting open dialogue and fostering intellectual growth by offering new perspectives.
Ariel Lawhon Geddy Lee
On the top floor of Jernigan Hall, the leaders of the Center for Digital Equity (CDE) are charged with bridging the digital divide in the Charlotte area and beyond. For some of their constituents, a staff member — called a digital navigator — serves as a connection point to find available resources for securing affordable broadband internet service and technology. Others in the community work with a digital navigator to develop new technological skills and literacy.

CDE is supported by an endowment from the Knight Foundation. The group is also concluding its third year of a four-year grant from the Mayors Equity Initiative and partners with numerous public and private organizations. CDE is our moto come to life – “Not to be served, but to serve.”
