PLYMOUTH DRIVERS CAN REFUSE PASSENGERS WITHOUT MASK

Taxi drivers in Ply- mouth can refuse passengers who are not wearing a face mask. City councillors were told drivers would be supported if they refused any- one without a mask

as long as they were not exempt. The issue came up during a discussion about how the taxi trade has been operating during the pandemic. Councillors were concerned that taxis

were not included when a law was brought in making face coverings com- pulsory on public transport. Drivers are allowed to fit a plastic screen, as long as it meets guidance.

WEARING FACE MASK IN TAXIS ‘VITAL’ SAY MIDDLESBROUGH HEALTH CHIEFS

Middlesbrough Cou- ncil is urging every- one who shares transport to wear face coverings amid concerns over a minority of people using taxis who are not covering their faces. In addition, hackney drivers are being reminded of the importance of keep- ing a record of their passengers to sup- port NHS Test and Trace. Mahrouf Hussain, chairman of the Mid-

dlesbrough Hackney Carriage Associa- tion, said: “Our members would like to see passengers wearing face cover- ings for all journeys to protect drivers’ health and wellbe- ing and of course passengers’ own safety.” A spokesperson for Boro Cars said: “While it isn’t a legal requirement

drivers to wear face coverings, we issue them and PPE to all of our drivers free of

for

charge. “Many of our drivers and customers are already wearing face coverings and we urge everyone to work together and do the same to help stop the spread of the virus and keep Middlesbrough safe.” Drivers of both hackney carriages and PHVs are en- titled to refuse journeys if a passen- ger refuses to wear a face covering without reasonable justification.

BLACKBURN WITH DARWEN COUNCIL LAUNCHES COVID-SAFE CAB DRIVE

FOR COVID SAFE JOURNEYS £2.50

THERMOMETER FPP2 FACEMASKS £2.50

A fleet of ‘Covid- safe’ cabs has been prepared at Black- burn with Darwen Council’s Davyfield Road depot. Taxis and private hire vehicles have been fitted with Per- spex screens to provide extra pro- tection for drivers and customers from coronavirus. The council has invested £64,000 in a commitment to fit the screens in all of the borough’s 1,000 licensed taxis and PHVs. Stickers have also been used in cars with important public health mes- saging and along with the usage of face coverings, the vehicles will be deemed to be ‘Covid-safe’. The project has been backed by Pennine Lancashire licensing officers

and Directors of Public Health from across Lancashire. The Council has funded the purchase and installation of screens with drivers responsible for replacements as and when necessary. The Council has also been engaging with the trade, promot- ing Covid-safe practices. Taxi drivers are being encouraged to get tested either via the Mobile Testing Units or the Regional Test- ing Unit at Royal

Blackburn Hospital. Mohmmed Amin Kapadia, driver and BwD Private Hire Driver Association representative, said: “This is a really good initiative and we are really thankful to the council. We put for- ward the idea for a subsidy for the screens so we are really grateful that it has been fully paid for. These screens will make drivers feel more secure and hopefully the passengers will feel safer too.
