MANCHESTER POLICE FAIL TO INVESTIGATE PHV BREAK-IN DUE TO “COVID CRIME SCREENING POLICY”

A taxi driver says police have refused to pursue an investi- gation after his Toyota Prius PHV was broken into even though he has CCTV footage which clearly shows the thieves and their number plate. The theft, which took place outside the home of Asghar Butt on July 26, as he and his family slept has left the

whole family feeling vulnerable. Two mobile phones, £140 cash and a sat nav were taken and Mr Butt says the theft is the latest in a string of anti- social acts against him.

Asghar reported the crime and spoke twice to his local police station but then he received a message informing him there would be

no investigation due to their 'COVID crime screening pol- icy' as it 'does not

Four bungling bur- glars who ran a mile from the scene of their crime were caught by police in their pre-booked getaway taxi. Just before mid- night on 30 April they were seen by residents, all wear- ing face masks, on the driveway of a bungalow where a husband and wife lived with their adult son. The men forced their way in the front door, despite the

attempts to stop them,

"where is the JD bag?". Minutes later they left empty-handed unable to find the item. They then ran

family's shouting

to a location in the Tea Green area of Luton where they had arranged to meet the taxi. But by the time they got in the taxi, police were on the scene and stopped the car. Luton Crown Court heard that it took nine minutes to jog through deserted streets at the height of lockdown. Their crime was described in court as "botched and ill-planned" and lacking "sophistica- tion". Michael Anderson, 21, Leroy Cariata, 26, Kenny Caprani, 22, and Nico Harring- ton-Brown,

19,

pleaded guilty to burglary. However what the burglars

had been looking for is still unknown as they have never answered any ques- tions during police interviews, said the prosecutor. Anderson and Caria- ta were each jailed for two years and four months. Caprani and Har- rington-Brown were given 24-month sus- pended prison sentences. Judge Mark Bishop told the gang: “There can be few more terrifying experiences than to have four hooded men kicking at your front door at mid- night and then demanding some- thing you don't have.”

involve threat, risk, harm or vulnerabili- ty or likely public interest factors'. He was advised instead to ring the Victim Support Ser- vice.

Asghar says that he and fellow cabbies

have noticed an upsurge in incidents - including their cars being egged, win- dows broken and runaway

fare-

dodgers - since the Covid crisis. He thinks this is down to a lack of police action during the crisis, due to the force being under- staffed during a time of unprece- dented demand. Asghar said : "I'm scared they can come again and they could even come in my house. I have CCTV which shows the time, the

people and the car registration they arrived in. I told them everything and then I get this message saying they won't investi- gate. "It's not right. I feel insecure and help- less in this city." Greater Manchester Police said they had looked at the CCTV but due to the low value of the items taken and the fact no damage was caused combined with demand on resources, they are no longer investigat- ing.
