STOKE-ON-TRENT TAXI DRIVER: ‘THERE’S NO-GO AREAS AS KIDS THROW BRICKS AT US’

A taxi driver has revealed how some parts of Stoke-on- Trent have become no-go areas - after seeing his car pelted with bricks. The Stoke Sentinal repirts that Fez Hus- sain, who works for Lucky Seven, has spoken out about the racism and abuse suffered by cabbies as they pick up and drop off pas- sengers around the city. He was filmed as part of BBC2’s new hard-hitting docu- mentary Cops Like Us which looks at the challenges faced

Lucy Seven taxi driver Fez Hussain

by Staffordshire Police. Fez believes racism is on the rise in the Potteries with racial slurs now creeping

back in. He tells the camera crew: “I’ve always had positive rela- tionships with the police. There’s good

and bad in every- thing. There’s good taxi drivers who will have a great rela- tionship with the police and then there’s bad taxi drivers who always seem to be getting in trouble. “When I was at high school I remember being called a Paki for the first time and thinking: “That’s rare”. And now, you know, it’s kind of creeping back in. “You can speak to other taxi drivers

who will probably concur with the sen- timent that they don’t feel comfort- able driving to certain places. They don’t feel comfort- able driving there because, even as recently as last year, there were kids throwing bricks at the taxis. “What’s stopping those children from doing it? Nothing essentially. “People are just unaware so they act on impulse and per-

haps instinct to think we’re under threat and therefore we have to act to protect our own. “Did I think I’d have children where I thought would I have to worry about someone calling them names, racial names or insulting their religion? No I didn’t.” The final part of Cops Like Us - made by production com- pany Dragonfly - aired on Tuesday March 31.

HUNT FOR KNIFEMAN WHO ROBBED GREENOCK DRIVER

SHOTS BLASTED AT TAXI PARKED OUTSIDE BIRMINGHAM TAKEAWAY

Detectives are in- vestigating after two gunmen fired shots at a taxi which was parked up out- side a takeaway in Winson Green. Fortunately, no-one in the taxi was hurt and nobody else nearby sustained any injuries. According to the Birmingham Mail, West Midlands Police say two men fired a gun at the taxi which was parked up outside Top Taste take- away. Armed police were sent to the scene and a forensic team searched for clues. So far no arrests have been made. Detective Inspector

Kat Sibley, who is leading the investi- gation said: “During an international pan- demic, where peo- ple’s lives are already very much at risk, there is still a very small number of people commit- ting violent crime on our streets. “These selfish peo- ple do not care about the safety of anyone, not even their friends and family. It’s pure luck that their actions didn’t leave anyone needing treatment for serious or life- threatening injuries, which would have put extra strain on our amazing health- care workers. “Right now we’re

doing crucial work to protect the NHS and save lives, but we also remain com- mitted to tackling violence in all its forms. “My team will be working round the clock this weekend to find the people responsible for this shooting. “We’re determined to find and arrest them as soon as possible, so that we can free up more officers to help in the fight against Covid-19. “I’m urging the pub- lic to help us do this – if you know who carried out this attack, please do the right thing and tell us.”

A taxi driver was attacked and rob- bed in his car by a knifeman in Port Glasgow early on a recent morning. The Greenock Tele- grap reports that a shocking assault happened just before 4am.

A male entered the taxi from an address in Greenock and asked the driver to take him to Port Glasgow. He then presented the blade and police say there was a physical alter- cation in the vehicle. The male gained

possession of the taxi keys and a piece of taxi equipment. The driver was left badly shaken and in a state of shock fol- lowing his ordeal. Officers say that they are ‘following a positive line of inquiry’.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ROBBERY AT KNIFE-POINT OF NOTTS DRIVER

Police investigating an alleged knife- point robbery of a taxi driver have arrested a 48-year- old man in con- nection with the inci- dent. According to the Nottingham Post, a man requested to be dropped off at a location in Gilt Hill, Giltbrook, before allegedly threaten-
