ROUND AND ROUND WE GO…


… and where we start, nobody knows. Yes, the original phrase in that saying was “stop”; however we’re looking at a situation which is shrouded in mystery as to where to start – in respect of the gradual release of the nation’s lockdown, and the effect(s) that will have on our industry.


In the month that has gone by since the last edition of PHTM, so much has changed… and yet it hasn’t. Yes, folks are allowed to go back to work (sort of, depending on what work they do and where), to gather in miniscule groups, to travel to a local beach without being pounced on and questioned by the resident gendarmes. But transport is still a conundrum: travellers and commuters are warned against using public transport.


That warning hasn’t done our industry any favours… the confusion and concerns have been compounded rather than cleared up. Therefore we have doubled up (if that is possible!) our efforts in trying to allay that confusion, and once again to shout from the rooftops that our trade needs government support with a protection package to protect drivers and their passengers.

That protection package – in our opinion – must include the installation of protection screens in as many licensed saloon vehicles and minibuses as possible. You’ll see that our main feature this month focuses on that point, and endeavours to provide as much factual information as possible to respond to the myriad of queries and concerns put forward by licensing authorities in particular.


We’re also delving into the world of school contracts… that will be an ongoing platform over the next few weeks/months as schools open in their sporadic fashion around the country. Check out our initial feature inside.


The other drum we shall continue to beat until it hurts every- body’s ears, is: Where is the financial support for our industry? The Government, as you all know, has dished out funding to every other branch of UK transport except for taxi and private hire. Yes, the Chancellor has organised conditional grants and loans under the banner of “self-employed”, which only embraces a small proportion of taxi/PHV licence holders. We’re talking about proper subsidies, as has been afforded bus and coach and rail industries, and ancillary staff.


Let’s look at some figures: The train industry in the UK employs some 240,000 staff nationally, including around 20,000 drivers of passenger trains, freight trains and the London Underground. The UK bus and coach industry employs a total of 114,730 staff, including not only drivers but also maintenance and admin staff.


What we’re shouting about is: What about the 412,317 taxi and private hire drivers licensed in England, Scotland and Wales? It’s safe to say that our industry is by far and away the largest of the land passenger transport sectors.
