The world has changed. As we try to navigate a ‘new normal’, how we choose to travel for work and pleasure is no longer a fore- gone conclusion. Road user charging schemes in the Cap- ital are not just back - they’re more ex- pensive. The tube, buses and the over- ground are running a limited service, the net result is train overcrowding. Across the rest of the country there are also generally less services – which makes social dis- tancing difficult, if not impossible. Through it all the private hire and taxi


trade has not just survived, but in some cases actually thrived. Companies have utilised dis- counts for NHS staff and care work- ers to keep our hospitals function- ing. They’ve set up food parcel delivery services for the vul- nerable and have been working with local councils trans- porting patients and key workers’ chil- dren to school. Firms have em- braced delivery work to keep their fleet moving and their drivers earning – these new revenue streams will contin- ue for some time. The green shoots of


recovery are begin- ning to show with business travel. Al- though we’re a long way from travelling across the country to attend meetings etc, more and more people are returning to work – and they now have to make a choice about the transportation meth- od they’re comfort- able using. Now more than ever it’s imperative that employers embrace flexibility in working practices – both where staff work and how they travel for work purposes. For smaller busi- nesses that can be as simple as setting up an account with


your local taxi firm. Not only will this mean preferential fares, it’s important to note that most firms treat account work as priority work – giving your staff the edge dur- ing peak times. Larger companies may want to enforce established travel policies and bud- gets and cost centres – in this case you should ap- proach your tech management centre and enquire about their taxi offering through vetted net- works, such as iGo, which offers a nation- wide on-demand service across multi- ple sites if required.


Given the choice between travelling on a busy train car- riage or with a single driver, most employees would choose the latter. Many firms are now installing protective screens and all the operators Autocab works with have implemented strict cleaning and hy- giene protocols. Set up a business account with a local firm which offers an app, web booking or corporate account portal – removing the need to pay for trips by cash as the account can be set- tled by card or invoice, remotely. The added benefit


of booking by app is the ability to track the car’s progress – employees need only head outside their home or office when the car arrives. The private hire trade has shown the nation that it is an integral part of the local community, a lifeline for our most vulnerable and part of the very fabric of society with drivers going above and beyond to fulfil jobs.
