LATEST NEWS FR THE NPHTA AT WORK:
Following is an exchange of emails from Dave Lawrie, director of the NPHTA, with his own local MP the Rt Hon Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen. The ‘paper trail’ started with Dave’s initial email to the Prime Minister, the Chancellor, the Transport Minister, the heads of UPHD, the National Taxi Association and Unite the Union.

Whilst the work done so far is applaudable, and the bounce back loan is a huge step in the right direction, it is still a loan.
Many small businesses do not want, did not need, and may cannot afford even more overheads right now.
The major advantage of the new bounce back loan over all other schemes announced to date is that finally it recognises the difference between total turnover (business income) and net profit (surplus funds.)

We urgently need a chat regarding the taxi and private hire industry. Lives are being put at risk due to lack of local authority approval for safety measures nationally. Many local

authorities are looking for guidelines from government: the guidance is there, but not clear enough.
If we can establish guidelines, then the current pre action protocol letter issued against TfL can quite easily and very swiftly be undermined and resolved, whilst at the same time [it will be possible to] protect lives, provide safe distancing, and protect the NHS.
As you now know, I am the director of the only national asso- ciation that represents ALL aspects of the taxi and private hire industry: we represent everyone from hackney drivers, private hire drivers, private hire operators, trade suppliers, and local associations.
We truly are the most encompassing and national associa- tion; we can help, we can underpin legal actions, we can support the government in its plans, and turn this into a seri- ously positive spin ready for the next elections.
But we simply have to act fast. A meeting or a call would be faster, but if you would prefer to do it all via email, that’s fine if you could include other relevant bodies within the thread to speed up the cycle.
We could include [Transport Minister] Grant Shapps; Paul Walker of the DfT, who is already on our mailing list and working very well with us; the Department for Business; Department for Health, whoever else you think would benefit from this exchange.
The latest guidance issued refers on more than one occasion to the installation of separation screens (shown below), but many authorities including TfL (Transport for London), TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester), Glasgow City Council and others are still claiming this is not clear enough. The guidance sets out:-
Where the social distancing guidelines cannot be followed in full in relation to a particular activity, businesses should con- sider whether that activity needs to continue for the business to operate; and if so, take all the mitigating actions possible to reduce the risk of transmission between their staff.
Mitigating actions include: • further increasing the frequency of hand washing and sur- face cleaning
• keeping the activity time involved as short as possible • using screens or barriers to separate people from each other
