ROUND THE COUNCILS LEICESTER:

PENDLE: PASSENGERS CONSULTED ABOUT TAXI USE

People are being asked for their views on whether the number of hackney carriages normally operating in Leices- ter meets passen- gers’ demands. Leicester City Coun- cil licenses over 300 HCs to work in the city, and is carrying out a consultation with customers. They will be asked a number of questions about their use of taxis, including how easily they were able to flag one down and whether they were able to get one where and when required. The passenger sur- vey is being carried out online at Leices-

ter City Council’s consultation page, and runs until June 11. Work began just before the coron- avirus lockdown to survey the number of taxis, ranks and pas- sengers queueing. Originally the pas- senger survey was due to be carried out in person, but the lockdown means it is now being done online, so the results can be matched to the traffic data. Passengers will also be asked if the coro- navirus crisis will affect their decision on whether or not to use taxis in future. Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: “It is important to know whether the

number of hackney cabs licensed to operate in Leicester reflects the needs of customers, who want to be sure they can get a taxi when- ever they need to. “The market has changed over recent years, so this survey will help give us an up to date under- standing of people’s experiences of using taxis locally. “Unfortunately the work that we’d started was inter- rupted by lockdown, so we are carrying out this consultation online, to ensure it is as close in time as possible to the orig- inal traffic surveys we’ve already done.”

PASSENGERS URGED TO WEAR FACEMASKS

Pendle residents have been urged to wear facemasks or other face coverings when travelling in taxis. The Lancashire Tele- graph reports that Pendle Council lead- er Cllr Mohammed Iqbal said the move was in line with the government's guid- ance on preventing the spread of coron- avirus. He also urged taxi drivers to place indi- vidual passengers in

the back left-hand seat for vehicles and reduce occupancy in larger taxis to help keep a safe dis- tance. Cllr Iqbal said: “We’re following the latest government guidelines which advises taxi passen- gers to wear face coverings where social distancing of two metres isn’t possible. “We have contacted all taxi operators in Pendle to ask them

HULL: SHORT-TERM TAXI LICENCES LAUNCHED

Taxi drivers can apply online for a free four-month licence to help them keep their business- es running. The short-term li- cences have been introduced to pre- vent drivers having to undergo a full renewal application – which involves a fee and a visit to the council’s licensing offices. The change, agreed by members of Hull City Council’s Li- censing Committee, makes renewals sim- pler and safer, allowing licence holders to put off the usual payment until October. Cllr Mike Thompson, portfolio holder for public protection, said: “Our licensing team has worked as quickly as possible to put this new tem- porary system in place so we can pro- tect licence holders

and staff. “It’s one of many things we’re doing differently at the moment, to contin- ue to provide a service alongside observing social dis- tancing measures. “While most people in the city should not be using taxis at the moment, there are still those who rely on them, including key work- ers. We really appreciate our drivers who are continuing to work, providing a vital service while com- plying with social distancing and tak- ing precautions like disinfecting handles and seatbelts. “A large number of licences expire at the end of June; these licence hold- ers must apply for their four-month licence as soon as possible to ensure we can process

applications as ther final date to apply has already passed. Only one applica- tion is needed no matter how many licences the appli- cant has to make it as simple as possi- ble”. All licence holders will receive a letter from the council to make them aware of the change. Successful appli- cants will receive an electronic letter con- firming their licence status and must keep their

ID

badges, as these need to be used in conjunction with the letter. A normal re- newal application will still be required together with the appropriate

before the expiry of any four-month licence on 31 Octo- ber. For full details visit: h u l l .gov. u k / t a x renewal.

to carefully consider the recent updates on taxi travel to make it as safe as possible for both passengers and drivers,” Cllr Iqbal added.

Mmmm....It is worth pointing out that the Government has not mandated the use of face masks, it is merely advising that drivers consider wearing a face cov- ering while in their licensed vehicle. - Ed.
