UPDATE ON FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE LEEDS CLEAN AIR CHARGING ZONE

Following the an- nouncement inMarch delaying the Leeds Clean Air Charging Zone (CAZ) until January 2021 at the earliest, Leeds City Council (LCC) has updated its financial support

schemes

with the latest infor- mation and answer FAQs. The

interest-free

loan scheme (for taxi and private hire) continues to be paused. All repay- ments have been suspended until fur- ther notice and the council is still not currently accepting

new applications. Additionally, there is still no date for the next round of the large vehicle grant scheme

which

means that LCC is not accepting new applications for non- scheduled buses, coaches or HGVs. In light of the delay to the scheme, the council is pausing all grant payments for vehicles purchased after the 26th June 2020 until further notice. This means that new grant applications for any type of vehicle are not being accepted

at present. LCC will continue processing payments for appli- cants who have purchased or up- graded their vehicle before 26 June and satisfy its eligibility criteria. LCC will continue with updates re- garding the CAZ. For more informa- tion on the zone, please visit their website: www.leeds. gov.uk/cleanairzone What action to take next? • If you have applied for an interest-free loan for a taxi or private hire vehi-

JLR DEVELOP WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM FOR OSLO

JLR is working in Oslo with taxi net- work Cabonline; charge point opera- tor Fortum Re- charge and US wire- less charging spec- ialist Momentum Dynamics to build a wireless, high-pow- ered charging infra- structure for electric taxis. The ‘ElectriCity’ ini- tiative has been launched as part of a drive to make all public transport in Oslo emissions free by 2028. Through the project Jaguar Land Rover will provide 25 Jaguar I-PACE mod- els – equipped with wireless charging technology to Cab- online, the largest taxi operator in the Nordics.

JULY 2020

The vehicles will be charged from multi- ple charging plates rated at 50-75kW each, that will be installed in the ground in a series at pick-up-drop-of f points. This allows each equipped taxi to charge while queuing for the next fare. The system, which uses no cables and is situat- ed below ground, requires no physical connection between charger and vehicle, engages automati- cally and provides on average 6-8 min- utes ofenergy per each charge up to 50kW. The

taxi then

receives multiple charges throughout the day on its return to the rank, main-

taining a high bat- tery state of charge and the ability to remain in 24/7 ser- vice without driving range restrictions. According to JLR the project aims to develop a model that can be imple- mented

almost

anywhere, which it believes will help the rapid adoption of EVs globally. Prof Sir Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief

Executive,

said: “We’re com- mitted to making electric

vehicles

easier to own and use. The taxi indus- try is the ideal test bed for wireless charging, and in- deed for high- mileage

electric

mobility across the board.”

cle: your payment holiday remains in place and you do not need to con- tact LCC. You can choose to make full or part-pay- ments if your cir- cumstances allow. The council will contact you again with any further updates.

• If you have applied for a taxi or private hire grant: your application will be processed as usual if you have already upgraded

your

vehicle and you do not need to take further action. LCC

will contact you again with any fur- ther updates.

• If you have applied for the Large Vehi- cle Grant Scheme (LVGC): applica- tions and pay- ments for vehicles already purchased will continue to be processed. LCC will contact you directly with any further up-dates or requests for infor- mation.

Please continue to send any details required under the terms of the loan or grant

agreement e.g. proofs or any

information specifi- cally requested. LCC is extremely busy, so do not con- tact the council by phone unless it is absolutely neces- sary. If you have an enquiry about the LVGC only, please contact LCC in the same way that you applied. If you have an enquiry about support for taxi or PHVs, please con- tact the council at cazsupport@leeds. gov.uk. By following these instructions LCC can respond to your enquiry as quickly as possible.

CHARGING NETWORK EXPANDS ACROSS WEST MIDLANDS

Engie has an-

nounced a part- nership with Broms- grove District Coun- cil to provide EV charging across the area in support of the councils Ultra Low Emission Vehi- cles

Bromsgrove DC won funding for the provision of EV charging under the Governments’ ULE Taxi

Infrastructure Strategy

launched in 2019. Engie, which owns and operates the GeniePoint Network will install thirteen 50kW+ rapid charg- ers across Broms- grove district, pro- viding operational customer

service

and maintenance services for the next ten years. The chargers will be installed by BMM Energy Solutions, with the first due to start in early sum- mer and finish by the end of the year.

Scheme and sup- porting the switch to clean transporta- tion is a major part of the council’s drive for cleaner air. To encourage this, for the first year follow- ing installation, all thirteen chargers will be made avail- able free of charge to registered taxis and PHVs. Following this will be a contin- ued discounted rate of 75% for years two-five, and 50% thereafter until the contract end. All the chargers will be PAYG (pay as you go) and offer contactless credit or

debit card pay- ments,

for the

general public. The tariff will be com- petitively

priced

with no connection fee and a £0.28p/ kWh cost. Alex Bamberg, Man- aging

Director

Engie EV Solutions, said. “Bromsgrove DC is successfully putting together a clean

transport

strategy to enable drivers to make the change to zero car- bon transport. Our GeniePoint Network is nationwide so once

registered,

drivers can always find a charger wher- ever their journey takes them across the country.” Drivers can find out more at: www.geniepoint.co.uk
