HOW GREAT THIS TRADE IS??!!
… but how few are listening, that’s the thing. Today, as we put this next edition of PHTM to bed, it was announced that the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, “beefed up” enforcement powers to ensure passengers wear face coverings during journeys on public transport – which of course does not include taxi and private hire in England. More about that inside.
Despite statistics showing 86 per cent compliance during the early days of this edict, Mr Shapps announced that TfL, Network Rail and the British Transport Police will be “tightening up” on ensuring face coverings are worn during journeys. The Department for Transport said the change means TfL has been designated as a prosecuting authority, thereby allowing it to prosecute passengers who refuse to wear a face covering or refuse to pay a fine of up to £100 for non-compliance.
What is all this going to cost? Where is some financial support for our industry?

Then in Parliament, ex-Minister Christopher Chope said the Government regards coach operators “with contempt”. He said: “My honourable friend failed to respond to the question about coach operators which rather indicates that, as the coach indus- try feels, the Government regards them with contempt.”
Aw diddums. Our industry would be more than delighted to have its share of the bus/coach industry’s billions in handouts… we’d really appreciate a bit of contempt like that – not the sort we’re getting presently, which is total ignorance, lack of recognition and zero support of any description, financially or otherwise.
This month’s PHTM brings you the latest trade developments – or lack of them, as the case may be. We look at the ins and outs legally of refusing a fare; we look at the current ‘league table’ of councils allowing protection screens; we look at the debacle which the management of school contracts is turning into. And all the lowdown on face coverings. All that is inside this edition.
Today’s breaking news also includes a (regretful) directive from Addison Lee to all their drivers, that TfL has threatened to re- voke AL’s private hire operator licence if each and every pro- tection screen installed in the fleet is not removed forthwith. So much for public and driver protection TfL style. Words fail me... momentarily, not for long, but we’ll have to see what the outcome of this latest edict will be.
You might even find some non-Covid news! – and Round the Councils, and WWTF, and Know Your Rights, Taxi Law Explained and our other usual reliable departments that add up to a damned good read, as folk keep telling us.
You know what? There are not enough “what-ifs” and “woulda- coulda-shouldas” to cover all the contingencies that have cropped up within this industry over the past few weeks alone. What’s worse, it seems nobody outside the industry gives a damn (polite version).
Well, we do… give a damn, that is; and we’ll continue to rattle every conceivable cage until one of the appropriate parrots falls off its perch and listens. That’s a threat and a promise.
