After months of turmoil the country is slowly moving into what is more likely to be the new normal. While some industries have been recruiting more employees to keep up demand to feed and protect the nation, the transport and travel sector has been hit hard. None more so


than the hackney and private hire industry, with a majority in the taxi trade, both owner-drivers or the self-employed. The furlough scheme which protects the vast number of employees in other hard hit sectors is largely not available to the private hire or taxi trade. With fear of the virus still on everybody’s mind, we at FAB looked at how we could give drivers and their customers alike, confidence to start the uphill struggle to rebuild the industry. There are protec- tive screens popping up in shops, takeaways and other establishments where there is an interaction with the public, so why not the taxi vehicles that are not purpose-built with built in screens. We looked for the best method toconstruct our screens, consider- ing driver and passenger safety and airbag deployment, without the need to drill and bolt into the framework of the vehicle. The biggest problemwe faced was the huge variety of vehicles that are available to the industry, so we borrowed a range of makes and models to make templates for each vehicle type. Although the templates enable us to fit most screens effortlessly, we also must take into consideration the position of the driver’s seat. These adjustments can be made when the vehicle arrives or when fitted on site, making the screens customised to that

particular vehicle. We have been taking group bookings all over the country, with our fitters leaving in the very early hours of the morning and not returning till late that evening, with further bookings for the same area once other drivers have seen our screens.
