..ACHIEVEMENT TAXI DRIVING COURSES

PROVING POPULAR IN SELBY

Taxi driving courses are being run in Selby to help cabbies get

extra qualifications. The courses are being run by Quality Trans- port Training (QTT). The training pro- gramme, which is funded by the Learning and Skills Council’s Train to Gain project, gives taxi drivers the chance to gain NVQ and BTEC qualifications, passenger-carrying vehicle (PCV) licences, and certificates in health and safety, dis- ability awareness and customer care.

In many parts of the country, such as Leeds and Leicester, it is now compulsory for taxi drivers to have NVQ Level 2 qualifications in road passenger vehicle driving (RPVD).

It is not yet compulso- ry in Selby, but QTT is encouraging local taxi drivers to take advan- tage of the courses on offer.

The 12-week courses, which are also open to drivers of private hire vehicles, also help to improve driver and passenger safely. “It’s about making the

drivers aware of their responsibilities,” Phil Harvey, QTT’s opera- tions manager, told the Selby Post.

The first course in Selby was held earlier this year and all 23 drivers who took part gained BTEC and NVQ qualifications. They were presented with their certificates

Enrolment has now begun for the second course in Selby. After 12 weeks of training the drivers take two online tests, which will take the form of multi- ple-choice questions. In the past there has been little in the way of job-related, accredited training as a licensing requirement for taxi drivers. Now, because of new technology and changing taxi and pri- vate hire legislation incorporated within the Disability Discrimi- nation Act (DDA), extra training is now seen as crucial in improving the servic- es provided by drivers.
