www.phtm.co.uk august 2009 The official newspaper of the National Private Hire Association DRIVER MURDER NUMBER 50:

VICTIM STABBED IN BIRMINGHAM Driver Mohammed

Arshad, 36, died after he was found seriously injured at a roadside following an assault in Kings Norton, Birming- ham, on Wednesday night, July 22.

Detectives launched a murder investigation after the father of three was found in Wast Hills Lane shortly before 9pm by a member of the public. Mr Arshad was taken to Selly Oak Hospital where he later died.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said that a post mortem examination carried out on Mohammed Arshad established that he had died from stab wounds to the head. Mr Arshad’s aban- doned car, a blue Ford Galaxy, was discov- ered a mile away in Shannon Road. A

Mohammed Arshad

spokeswoman for West Mercia police said that forensic tests on Mr Arshad’s car were ongoing. A major inci- dent room was set up at Redditch police sta- tion, where detectives are working to piece together the sequence of events.

According to Chief Inspector Amanda Bott, Mr Arshad had suffered other injuries to his body, but could not be specific about what those wounds were. She said: “This

was a horrific attack on a man who was well respected in the com- munity, which has naturally been left shocked by his death. “Our thoughts are now with his family - in par- ticular his wife, who has lost her husband, and three young sons who have been left without a father. Mr Arshad was a devoted family man who was known for his happy- go-lucky character and generosity. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Describing Mr Arshad as a ‘happy-go-lucky’ character,

brother-in-

law Mohammed Sheraz Hussain said: “We won’t rest in peace until his killer is caught and we would urge anyone who has any information at all about who might have done this or knows anything

that could help the investigation to get in touch with the police.” Steve Attwood, 60, the owner of Birmingham private hire company A Cars, where Mr Arshad had worked for five years, said: “He loved his three children and had another one on the way - his wife is seven months pregnant. The family is naturally dev- astated.”

Mr Attwood, who was at Selly Oak Hospital with Mr Arshad’s family on the night of the tragedy, said: “I have owned this company for 20 years and I have never seen anything as brutal as this.

“I don’t know what hap- pened but I do know that Arshad was a non- confrontational person.”

Our condolences go to Mr Arshad’s family, friends and colleagues.
