SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR PUNCHING HALIFAX CABBIE IN THE FACE

A man punched a Hal- ifax taxi driver when he refused to take him home.

The Halifax Courier reports that Ryan Collins, 19, admitted racially aggravated assault after attacking Nashir Khan of Local Cars in Halifax.

Collins and another man got into Mr

Khan’s taxi and were told the fare to Hud- dersfield was £12, which they were asked to pay in advance. They produced £5 and when Mr Khan asked them to leave the taxi, he was racially abused and Collins punched him in the face. He also tried to kick and punch the car. The Recorder of Brad-

ford, Judge Stephen Gullick, said it was an unpleasant and unjus- tified offence.

He gave Collins a two- month suspended sentence, a community order with a 12-month supervision require- ment and ordered him to pay £150 compensa- tion and £75 prosecution costs.

12 WEEKS FOR DUO’S DRUNK ATTACK ON ALDERSHOT CABBIE

Two men have been jailed for 12 weeks for assaulting a taxi driver in Aldershot.

The Aldershot News reports that Danny Hayes and Philip Jones attacked the taxi driver on December 20 last year after a night out. Jones, 24, of Tongham, and Danny

Hayes, 18, of Ash, both admitted assault by beating.

The court heard they had got into the taxi by the rank at Alder- shot station early in the morning. The driv- er decided to take them back to the sta- tion and when he stopped the two men

climbed out of the vehicle and started punching him.

He struggled to defend himself before being pulled out of the car by his right arm. An ambulance was called following the incident and the victim was taken to Frimley Park Hospital.

15 MONTHS FOR MAN WHO BIT SCARBOROUGH CABBIE’S EAR

A Scarborough man who bit the ear of a taxi driver during a fren- zied assault has been jailed for 15 months. According to the Scar- borough Evening News, Lee Hudson, 20, from Eastfield, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm - just weeks after taking part in an attack on a man as he lay on the ground. Appearing at York Crown Court, Hudson pleaded guilty to two

counts of assault caus- ing actual bodily harm and one of affray. Prosecuting, Stephanie Hancock said the attack on the taxi driver hap- pened as Hudson and his partner were head- ing home from a night out and he and the driv- er initially enjoyed some light-hearted banter before Hudson “flipped”.

The driver needed eight stitches to the tear in his ear and was

also left with bruising and swelling to his face, neck, throat, arms and shoulders. According to a victim statement, he could no longer cope with taxi driving in the Eastfield area.

Recorder Stephen Ashurst sent Hudson to jail for nine months for the assault on the taxi driver and a further six months each for the two other offences, to be served concurrently.

JAIL FOR GANG WHO VICIOUSLY ATTACKED SOUTHEND CABBIE

Christopher White, 24, part of a gang of yobs who beat up and tried to rob cabbie Keith Byrne, has been jailed for 18 months.

During the assault the cabbie also saw one of his attackers trying to stab him through the back of his seat as they demanded cash. At Basildon Crown Court, White pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob. Accord- ing to the Southend Evening Echo and

Journal, White was with 20-year-old Terrance Reason and Jared Sut- ton, 23, when taxi driver Keith Byrne picked them up in in October last year.

They launched their attack, repeatedly punching and kicking Mr Byrne, and one of the gang threatened to stab him.

The court heard that White didn’t know his pals were planning the attack or that they had a weapon, but admitted

punching Mr Byrne. Reason, 21, of Pitsea, was arrested at the scene of the attack. He denied assault with intent to rob, but jurors found him guilty and he was sentenced to four years in prison last December.

Jared Sutton, 23, was recognised by the cabbie at Reason’s trial. He pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob and was sen- tenced to two years four months in June.
