DON’T TAKE A CAB... ...YOU’LL GET STUNG


A taxi in the guise of a bumblebee will be buzzing around Lon- don’s roads this summer to raise awareness of the plight of bees.


The Beecab, which has a working beehive in the front seat, has


been customised for Pestival, an annual arts festival on the South Bank.


The bee-spoke taxi will drive around London until it reaches Pesti- val, which celebrates insects through con- temporary art, cinema,


music and comedy. Steven Benbow, a bee- keeper and driver of the cab, told the Hampstead and High- gate Express: “Bees and cabbies have a lot in common - the way bees navigate is very similar to the way cab drivers use the Knowl- edge to get round London. They both service the city, and with the Varroa mite wiping out wild bees, urban beekeeping is more important than ever.” The Wellcome Trust is supporting Pestival this year. The trust’s Pat Goodwin said: “The decline in bees and other pollinators may devastate our environment and would almost certain- ly have a serious impact on our health and wellbeing.”


YELLOW TAXIS TAKE TO TYNESIDE’S STREETS


Bright yellow cabs are set to catch the eye of drivers in Tyneslde. Ten taxis with the colourful livery are being rolled out by Noda Taxis.


The move follows an advertising agreement between the Newcas- tle-based firm and Real Radio.


As well as the New York-like yellow,


Real’s Barry The Dog logo has also been added to the backs of the cabs.


And passengers and passers-by are being asked to keep a look out for novelty pooches, with each car containing a slight- ly different nodding dog on the parcel shelf.

Binks told the New- castle upon Tyne Evening Chronicle: “We were extremely excited when the new additions to the fleet arrived. “We really hope that the public are going to look out for them. We know that Barry himself will bring a smile to people’s faces.”
