RULES 1. The entry with the highest number of points (including bonus points) from your 4 combined selections will be deemed the winner. For example, Everton (60 pts) Sheffield Utd (60) Carlisle (70) Rochdale (45) would total a combined 235 points.

2. The overall winner shall receive £500 Second place shall receive £150 Third place shall receive £100

3. There will also be a simultaneous competition (a Trixie) which will be for the entry with the highest number of points acrued on the following three occasions. Matches played between:

Season start to October 20th October 21st to January 17th January 18th to Seasons end

The following prizes will be on offer. First prize £50, Second prize £20, Third prize £10 on each occasion.

4. All entries must be received by 5 pm on Friday 28th August.

5. Any points won prior to this date will be valid and count towards your season total.

6. Because the Premiership is a cartel of “The Big Four” (Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool) the following handi- caps will apply to these teams. Man United – minus 34 pts, Chelsea – minus 29 pts, Arsenal – minus 22 and Liverpool – minus 30 pts. Similarly in the Championship there will be a handicap on Ipswich – minus 5 pts, Reading – minus 3 pts and Newcastle, West Bromwich and Middlesbrough (all minus 6 pts). In Division 1 Leeds will have a handicap of minus 8 pts together with The MK Dons (minus 6), Millwall (minus 4) and Norwich (minus 3). There will be no handicap in Division 2. So for example if your four teams were Chelsea (80) Ipswich (70) Leeds (75) and Rochdale (45) your total score would be 270 points minus your handicap of 29 + 5 + 8 (42 points) = 228 points nett.

7. With regard to the Trixie competition these handicaps will be deemed not to apply.

8. There will be bonus points awarded as follows: Each goal scored by your 4 teams will be worth a quarter of a point. This will count only towards the end of season competition and not the Trixie competition.

9. A FULL LIST OF ALL ENTRANTS WILL APPEAR IN OUR SEPTEMBER ISSUE. YOU CAN ENTER BY POST (ENTRY FORM OPPOSITE) TO PHTM COMPETITIONS, 501 OLDHAM ROAD, FAILWORTH, MANCHESTER M35 9AB OR VIA OUR EMAIL TO INFO@PHTM.CO.UK

10. A full breakdown of each entry’s team selection will ap- pear on our website - www.phtm.co.uk - in due course so you can see how you are doing in relation to everyone else.

Meanwhile.... It’s August and this year’s football season will be on us in a couple of weeks or less; and so it is time to lay down my marker for 2009-2010.

This year my protege Louis the Lip will be entering his teams in our fabulous football competition which leaves me this op- portunity to point you to some value bets that I will be plac- ing without compromise.

The Premiership will once again feature some shake-up be- tween the big four and despite the glorious blues signing half of Europe and me being a loyal City fan, I cannot see them figuring in the final shake-up. My preference is for LIVERPOOL who have continually closed the gap on Man Utd in previous months and at 7/2 represent great value especially if they keep the services of Alonso.

In the Championship in what looks like an almighty point scrapping contest with no one team vastly superior to an- other, I like the look of IPSWICH at 10/1 and SHEFFIELD UTD at 14/1. Both have good managers and managers with a good track record in the division and I feel they will give ourselves a good run for our money.

In Division 1, the three I like the look of are LEEDS now that Beckford has been retained at a top price 7/2, another York- shire club who were tipped for good things last year: HUD- DERSFIELD TOWN(12/1) and at a whopping 25/1 who’s to say that SOUTHAMPTON can’t triumph under their penalty. Naturally that 10 point deduction will limit their chances but if they get the wind in their sails who knows.

My nap though is in Division 2 where SHREWSBURY TOWN are massively over priced at 12/1. Last year’s favourites, they performed credibly at this level and were unlucky in the play- off final. The presence of big spending and big managed Notts County has opened the door for numerous clubs in this divi- sion.

In Europe I am the first to confess I don’t fully understand at present the Europa League; how you progress, is it ultimately a cup competition so I will reserve judgement at present. However the Champions League has become a benefit for Eu- rope’s elite and whilst Real Madrid appear to have been priced out of the market and the price thus reflected, I could only advise putting them in trebles and accumulators. The team I like the look of are INTER MILAN who have the benefit of Mourinho as coach, a hopefully revitalised Samuel Etoo in at- tack and last year’s forgotten man, Alexander Hleb. At 12/1, in a tournament that favours a consistency of performance, last year’s Scudetto A Champions will represent a value invest- ment.

Finally look out for clues from the Great Voltigeur as to the Leger but at this early stage I would advocate an interest on Golden Sword who showed recently that he is crying out for a true test of stamina.
