SILLY SEASON? not on your nelly!
Traditionally August was always regarded as ‘Silly Season’ in this trade, due to a lot of folk being on holi- day and because of a lack of anything going on. What a joke! This issue could hardly accommodate every- thing that’s kicked off during the last few weeks, as you will see.
Unfortunately this issue is the harbinger of bad news from Birmingham this time, covering the coroner’s verdict of accidental death of a wheelchair occupant in a taxi, and then at the last minute before press deadline, page one reports the death of yet another driver: this makes 50 murdered in the last 15 years. Obviously we’ll bring you more details on this matter
as we should get them by our next edition, but this was the result of a very nasty and frenzied knife attack on the driver. When is it going to stop? Bearing that point in mind, you will notice that in this issue there are several plugs for both in-car and out-of- car CCTV cameras in various licensing areas. There’s no question about the fact that these cam- eras act as a deterrent; our compa- ny profilee, A1 Leagrave 49ers of Luton, will vouch for that, as they have installed in-car cam- eras across their entire fleet of 130 vehi- cles. Check out their story inside. For a moment of light relief (!) you might enjoy reading our Driv-
er Profile, featuring one Adrian Fets of Durham fame. Then back to some more head-scratching and thought-provoking stuff, as there are two more consultations out this month. Opin- ion introduces them to you, and opines on their purpose and implications, as usual. As mentioned, our other departments are bursting at the seams with reports of hives of activity across the country. And thanks to all our sources for a particularly colourful Charity Corner this time. One wonders where all the sunshine came from... certainly not round our editorial offices! We mention the inclu- sion this month of a couple of extra depart- ments, Protest Plight

and Fine Fury. You’ve seen similar Protest pages before, but this issue brings a bumper crop. Coupled with our regular section Dereg Dilemma, these increasing numbers of protests against the issuing of further licences just keep coming through. This reinforces the stance the Association took back in 2004 when the OFT report and the Government response hailed the deregula- tion of taxi licences:
Taxi Insurance fleet and single vehicle specialist
Breakdown insurance from £63.64
Public Liability insurance from £59.85
Taxi office insurance from £262.50
that no consideration was given to the prac- tical problems caused by heightening taxi numbers. The financial problems speak for themselves, and are highlighted month after month. As for Fine Fury, again in these restrained financial times there seem to be pockets of Jobsworths who are determined to gain their stripes by inflict- ing their blinkered approach on well- meaning licence
holders, even those who are helping elder- ly passengers to the chemist. January’s Jobsworth award will have candidates fair lining up for it!
As always, we encour- age PHTM readers to send in your reactions, newsy bits, anything at all that you wish to be featured from round your way.
