They accounted for 2.1 billion of the total viewing hours, a 261 per cent increase on 2013, while 417 million of the tournament’s 635 million unique viewers watched from India. Interestingly, 40% of those who watched on TV were women and girls.
Much discussion was had online, with 1.8 million tweets containing the hashtag #CT17, a fourfold increase on 2013, while the ICC’s website and social media accounts served as a hub for tournament.
www.icc-cricket.com had more than 9 million unique visitors during the Champions Trophy, combining for more than 58 million page-views. Much of this growth was also driven by India, with 41.4 per cent of all web sessions and 34.6 per cent of all app sessions coming from the country.
Perhaps most heartening of all was how much this competition engaged a younger demographic, with 18-34-year-olds responsible for driving 80 per cent of all web usage during the tournament. The legacy of the tournament could extend beyond the resurgence of Pakistan, the emergence of Bangladesh, and the renewed potency of the ODI format. It could play its part in securing the future of cricket itself.
