CHAMPIONING WORLD CRICKET // ANTI-CORRUPTION
ANTI-CORRUPTION
even more straightforward.
There was a substantial increase in the number of the investigations conducted by the Anti- and 31 May 2018 compared to the previous 12-month period.
Under the new leadership of Alex Marshall, General Manager – Anti-Corruption Unit, 18 investigations were conducted, 17 of which were launched after Marshall’s arrival in post at the ICC on 1 September 2017.
Five were concluded, with charges brought in individuals who are not directly involved in cricket have had their corrupt activities disrupted – and 13 investigations remained ongoing as at 31 May 2018.
It is also important to note that alongside the individuals charged, there have been a number of people exonerated. That investigations are able to prove the innocence of players is an important part of the story. Two of the investigations were media stings; one investigation exonerated a groundsman and several players; whilst the other is ongoing.
There is a geographical spread of corrupt activity but the heart of corruption in cricket remains the unregulated betting markets of the Asian subcontinent.
There has been a pleasing increase in the number the ACU with reports of suspicious activity. Four international captains reported approaches during 2017-18 and every avenue was explored.
It is hoped that the revamped education platforms have had an effect on players’ willingness to come forward. The content of the education programme has been made more concise and contains more recent and relevant information for players about what is happening in relation to corruption in cricket around the world. There is an ongoing desire to improve the quality and consistency of the education.
The launch of the ICC ACU Integrity App is expected to make the reporting of suspicious activity even more straightforward.
Over the course of 2017-18, a total of 1,468 players, educated at 12 international events: the six ICC global events – ICC Champions Trophy 2017, ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, ICC World Cricket League Championship 2017, ICC U19 Cricket World and six other events – Caribbean Premier League 2017, Asian Cricket Council Youth Asia Cup 2017, T10 Cricket League 2017, Indian Premier League 2018, Hong Kong T20 Blitz, Pakistan Super League.
