Workforce and Experts Agree: We Need Change

Work is transforming. People are rethinking what they want to do, why they want to do it, and how they want to be treated. While it’s not as pressing an issue in senior living, remote working has changed approaches to offices, meetings, and business travel. Job openings are on a trend to hit pre- pandemic levels, while many workers are recovering, caring for children and spouses and parents, or looking for better wages. All these factors are important. But the most important for this industry is the way so many are searching for purpose

and meaning in their work. Senior living has what they’re looking for. It’s now a matter of communicating that, as well as all the other benefits it offers. The studies, reports, and data for this issue show that going “back to normal”

isn’t a viable option for any workplace or industry. The transformation has already started—workers, businesses, and the economy alike need more and different “soft skills,” such as knowing how to collaborate and communicate, whatever type of work they’re doing. “Skills for the New Environment” (p.8) looks at five of these and how they apply in senior living.

Some of the most interesting data was around how important learning is to

today’s employees at every level (p.28). A lifelong approach to learning is regarded as not only a necessity, but also a benefit—a way to enrich life and a gift you can give yourself.

The 2021 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference presents dozens of learning opportunities; some are highlighted in this issue (p.23), and there are many more on the website (conference.argentum.org). There are new details posted about the Dining & Hospitality Conference, with programming provided by the Culinary Institute of America, at conference.argentum.org/dininghospitality. Workforce transformation and teamwork are among the topics here, too. The schedule is up for the Executive Director Leadership Institute (EDLI), at conference.argentum.org/edli; it covers vital issues and new musts in topics including teamwork, diversity, risk management, time management, workforce development, and more, to earn more than 10 CEUs. What sets it apart: The EDLI class learns together and from each other as well as from senior living leaders, which often creates a lasting bond among each year’s certificate holders. Also recently posted: A template that can help you make the case for your organization or supervisor to approve your attendance at the conference, to be held Sept. 13-15 in Phoenix. Hope to see you there!
