The response of Lancashire’s business community to the current coronavirus crisis should come as no surprise to those who know the Red Rose county and those who live and work here.

Many of our manufacturers have responded magnificently to the calls for support for the NHS – moving at pace to switch production and to use their knowledge and expertise to help the frontline fight against the virus.

Other businesses are working extra hard to support their communities and to help their neighbours in these difficult times. Their charitable approach and desire to make a difference is again to be applauded.

The true spirit of Lancashire continues to shine through every day as we hear of companies going that extra mile and doing their bit. It is truly inspirational.

We feature just a few examples on the pages of this issue which, for the first time, we are distributing digitally, and there are many more. And we salute all businesses, big and small, that are rising to meet their individual challenges in these unprecedented times. We are updating daily with coronavirus news and advice at lancashirebusinessview.co.uk.

The efforts of organisations such as Boost, Lancashire’s Business Growth Hub, should also be recognised. Its #AskForHelp campaign has already helped thousands of people to manage the effects of the crisis.

It has also been good to see local authorities across Lancashire moving quickly to get much needed grant funding out to small businesses.

One thing is crystal clear, the resilience and innovation that Lancashire is known for is now needed more than ever.

As we also report in this issue, tourism and hospitality businesses have been particularly badly hit by the lockdown measures introduced to slow the spread of the virus.

Calls are growing for more support for the sector from central government – money that can go directly to these businesses to help them survive and protect jobs for the future.

The recovery will not happen overnight and we wait to see if that extra support is forthcoming for a section of the economy that is so important to Lancashire’s economic wellbeing.

The government support measures we’ve seen so far for business, including the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the ‘Bounce Back Loan’ scheme, are to be welcomed. They have gone some way to ease the pressure.

However, we can all also do our bit as Lancashire businesses. Our ‘Buy it in Lancashire’ campaign and the reasoning behind it are even more relevant today.

Support your neighbour if you can by sourcing goods and services from them. Spend money in the county and you’ll be helping secure the future of local businesses and the vital jobs that go with them.

We will need to all work together in Lancashire’s recovery. So we repeat our call for all businesses, large and small, to join with us and make the pledge: “If you can buy it in Lancashire, buy it in Lancashire!”
