Conlon Construction continues to build for the future thanks to strong foundations put down in Lancashire almost 60 years ago.
The family-owned business began life when current chairman Michael Conlon’s father and four other brothers from an Irish family came to Lancashire from various regions of the country. They had been attracted by opportunities in haulage for a huge project – the construction of the Preston bypass.
Over the years the company has evolved from haulage and civil engineering operation into a successful construction and property development group.
Today it is one of the most recognised construction businesses in Lancashire. On any one day up to 750 workers are employed on its sites in the North West and beyond, and the group has an annual turnover around the £40m mark.
Locally, its portfolio of high-profile projects is impressive, including the £12m project that has breathed new life into Preston’s iconic bus station and the transformation of the city’s markets.

The sensitive £1.9m renovation of the Spanish Hall in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens was also delivered by the company, headquartered in Bamber Bridge.
Working with a loyal, trusted and mostly local supply chain, Conlon has built up a strong reputation with major clients leading to significant repeat business.
Current workload includes clients such as the NHS, the police, local authorities and the Department for Education. The majority of projects are procured via public sector frameworks such as the North West Construction Hub.

Conlon’s notable achievements were recognised at this year’s Red Rose Awards with a double win. The company ended the evening with both the construction business and corporate social responsibility awards.
Announcing the latter of those honours, the judges said: “Conlon Construction set an unrivalled benchmark for CSR, not just within Lancashire but across the whole of the construction industry.”

Conlon will celebrate its 60th anniversary in November next year. The business philosophy laid down by Michael’s father and uncles remains strong and he believes that is why it has overcome the challenges of the past six decades and continues to thrive. It will also stand Conlon Construction in good stead moving forward, he adds.
Michael explains: “Throughout our history we’ve always looked after the cash and kept a strong balance sheet which provides confidence for our clients and suppliers.
“This long-term policy of financial prudence will reflect well upon us as our industry and the economy in general moves beyond the current coronavirus crisis.”
