It has taken time to get the government fully on board. But the sight of Rishi Sunak taking a January stroll along Morecambe’s seafront underlined the significance of the announcement of £50m of levelling-up cash to turn the Eden vision into reality.

Eden Project Morecambe, as the attraction is now known, is another ‘game-changer’ for Lancashire and its economy.

Annual visitor numbers are projected to be 740,000 and additional revenue brought into local businesses by the attraction is set to exceed the £50m government investment within months of the project opening its doors.

And make no mistake, the project may now have Morecambe in its title but this is a development that will benefit the whole of the county.

And as well as the Eden cash, Blackpool is getting £40m to deliver a new ‘Multiversity’ - a carbon-neutral, education campus in Blackpool’s Talbot Gateway Central Business District.

It is another significant project that will make a real and lasting difference, delivering a world class ‘university experience’ in the town centre. The Multiversity will promote higher-level skills, including automation and artificial intelligence, helping young people secure jobs of the future.

All told Lancashire did well in the latest round of levelling up funding – receiving £200m of the £350m being delivered to the North West for projects that have the ability to ‘spark transformational change’.

The county’s very public show of unity - and the collaboration and willingness to work together - when it came to the funding bids looks to have had the desired effect among those in central government.

Andy Walker, chief executive of the LEP, summed it up when he said: “We’ve demonstrated how as a county we can work together to get projects like this up and running for the benefit of the whole of Lancashire.”

Government support for Eden comes hard on the heels of the decision to base the new National Cyber Force in Samlesbury – another massive project where Lancashire’s united approach delivered.

The challenge now is to build on all this as we move forward together - and not to lose the momentum gained.

These recent success stories, and the work that went into securing them, should spur our politicians on to continue the quest to find a devolution deal that works for Lancashire.

They should also just be the beginning when it comes to our ambitions to attract more inward investment in the county. We have massive potential, let’s make sure Whitehall and Westminster continue to recognise that.

Working together works. We have the evidence.
