DEMONSTRATING AN ADVANTAGE
The important and growing role of Lancashire’s low carbon smart factory demonstrator at the AMRC North West was highlighted at the conference.
Professor Melissa Conlon, commercial director at the Samlesbury facility, also shared some of the collaborative work being carried out there.
She said: “The edge that we can give is people can come in and see the technologies in situ, they can understand from us that it was difficult to fit, but return on the investment is massive.
“You’ve got the experience of what we’ve done and we can impart that knowledge to you.
“The building is a research project, so we’re a looking to take that building as far as we can and push all of those technologies.
“The demonstrator is here to come and have a look at, to ask the questions and to take you on that journey to decarbonisation.”
She added: “We’re also working with a lot of really clever innovators on the ground in Lancashire developing low carbon technologies.
“We work with them to prove out those technologies from concept to getting them to the manufacturing process.”
Melissa said the AMRC was also working with RedCAT, the Lancashire Centre for Alternative Technologies, on commercialising products, an approach seen as unique to the county.
She said: “That’s really about landing that low carbon manufacturing technology within Lancashire, so those companies will actually open factories within Lancashire to bring high value jobs.
“And we’re also looking for new technologies. We really want to work with Lancashire innovators, creators of low carbon technologies and to demonstrate and showcase those in our building.”
She added: “It’s not just about manufacturers. If you look at the technologies within the building, some of them are applicable to anybody who’s got a building in terms of lowering the cost of ownership.”
David Lord, head of construction and low carbon and sustainability lead at Burnley College, told delegates small sized companies had the most work to do when it came to the net zero agenda.
He said: “We are working on small sized skills boot camps in order for them to upskill to drive the sector forward.
“There’s a fear from the small companies, the fear of the unknown, and there’s a barrier that we as educators have to reduce in order for them to be successful in what they need to do.”
He said: “It is about making the barriers go away, giving them the skills so they feel comfortable in order to deliver what they need. It is also about upskilling the existing workforce and the apprentices of the future.”
