He’d replace the linings in his workshop overnight and deliver the refurbished parts the next day. Over time, he was asked to source a wider variety of products and his reputation grew further afield. Today, still a family business, the company operates branches in Lancaster, Barrow, Blackpool, Kendal and Penrith, stocking 300,000 items and operating a fleet of 85 delivery vans. On an average day, more than 5,000 items are sent to customers, generating annual revenues of more than £20m.

The Carefoot group operates three companies: a construction division which undertakes work in the education, health, commercial, leisure and ecclesiastical sectors on behalf of private and public sector organisations; a transport division owning 28 tractor units and trailers hauling third-party goods across the UK, and a third division which lets out properties owned by the group. A labour shortage resulting from Brexit and steep increases in fuel prices means that despite a small increase in revenues, up beyond £30m, profit margins were squeezed.
