LEADING THE WAY

IN HELPING BUSINESSES BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE

From the smallest independent garage to a large construction group, local businesses of every description are benefitting from the support of Lancashire’s Colleges in their journey to becoming more sustainable.

The colleges have developed more than 60 ‘low carbon’ courses over the last 18 months with support from the DfE’s Strategic Development Fund, with more to come.

On these pages you will find examples of how organisations have worked in partnership with Lancashire’s Colleges - all rated Outstanding or Good by Ofsted - to become more sustainable and reap the rewards this brings.

Contact your local college or visit tlc.ac.uk/coursedirectory to begin your own journey.

Partnering for success

Blackpool and The Fylde College has proactively invested in a new facility dedicated to training in renewables and environmentally friendly building methods.

The Sustainability Centre is fitted with all the latest consumer-accessible green technologies, including solar PV and air source heat pumps and gives employers the opportunity to upskill engineers ready for the changes ahead.

Poulton-based DES Electrical Contractors has long worked with the college to futureproof itself against legislative changes and lead the way in becoming more sustainable. Director Sean Egan comments:

“Renewable energy will shape the future of electrical contracting and it’s great that the college has invested in a facility to help educate the next generation of engineers.”

Low Carbon Hub

Through its Low Carbon Hub, Burnley College provides expert training to help local employers to embrace vital new technologies, reduce their carbon footprint and boost business.

HycAero Ltd has tapped into the hub’s pioneering resources to great success.

Stephen Kelly, operations director, said: “The knowledge from the tutors and the facilities at Burnley College are first class. They’ve taken the time to understand our organisation, tailoring the training to what we do.

“From understanding the concepts and principles of low carbon to impact mapping and implementation, our training has demonstrated how we can use new technology to identify and reduce emissions and reduce waste from the overall process to cut down costs.”
