OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECRUITING AND UPSKILLING
Would you benefit from £3,000 for upskilling or recruiting young employees?
from 13,080 in 2018/19 to 10,350 in 2019/20 in Lancashire – mirroring the national pattern.
We have seen an increase in starts in the last year, with numbers starting to bounce back and employers re-engaging – at a time when the number of vacancies has surged. ‘Growing your own’ is a win-win in the present climate, with apprentices typically more loyal and committed.
As of the end of September last year, businesses across Lancashire had accessed £480,000, which has enabled 61 apprenticeships. It is much better to circulate funds locally than have them returned to the Treasury! To gain that support, employers simply need to sign up to the Lancashire Skills Pledge.

Dr Michele Lawty-Jones
Level-wise, Lancashire has seen an increase in the number of apprenticeships at higher and degree levels, to approximately 29 per cent of starts, with a slight decline in intermediate opportunities at Level 2.
In terms of the age split, 56 per cent of apprentices in Lancashire fall in the 16-24 age bracket, with the remainder being 25- plus, demonstrating that an apprenticeship can be undertaken at any age.
There is a co-ordinated approach across Lancashire-based apprenticeship providers through the Lancashire Work Based Learning Forum, working with the Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub, which enables employers to receive impartial advice and guidance to get involved.
This includes access to the Lancashire Levy Transfer Network to access unspent levy pledged by our larger employers.
Together, apprenticeships are promoted to young people in schools and colleges across the county through the Lancashire Careers Hub and the forum’s ASK programme, which includes story telling by young apprentice ambassadors – providing positive role models to boost aspiration and interest.
The national ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ service is used to enable young people to search vacancies to get a feel for the breadth and range of companies offering opportunities.
It is really important that employers and providers take the time to post their vacancies on the site so that they are promoted effectively to the Lancashire community.
At present, employers based in Lancashire County Council’s footprint can access a £3,000 incentive to recruit a young apprentice, subject to eligibility, via the Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub.
Get involved and ensure that your business is benefiting from apprenticeships.

With government covering nearly all the training costs this is an opportunity for your business. With free guidance, support and impartial advice to assist your business in how apprenticeships can be utilised to their greatest benefit for the whole workforce, current and future, this is a great opportunity to get involved.
This opportunity is being funded by Lancashire County Council with 100 grants available to businesses with fewer than 250 employees in Lancashire’s growth sectors, who have not recruited an apprentice in the last two years.
The funding is part of Lancashire’s Economic Recovery and Growth Fund and is targeted at the recruitment of 16-24 year old apprentices.
Lancashire Skills Pledge
Has your business signed up? Join more than 200 companies which have pledged to inspire, recruit and upskill Lancashire’s people.
The Skills Pledge is a way of reaching out to a wealth of support and advice to access a range of skills and employment initiatives including:
• How to engage with local schools and colleges to attract a future workforce
• How to build the talent of employees through apprenticeships
• What training is available to upskill an existing workforce
• How to reach those that wouldn’t consider applying for a job?
Answers to these and more are within easy reach by signing up to one or more pledges. What’s more, as a Skills Pledge Employer you get recognition for the great work you already do for your employees.
